Ravin' Mad
Posted by Larry Karnowski at November 3, 2002 1:53 PMSo last night as I was waiting for a friend, I sat and watched a Samurai Jack episode on Tivo. It was about an evil Rave that controlled kids' minds to turn them into evil automatons. It was too funny! No wonder I never got into the Rave scene. After a half-hour battle sequence (God bless Samurai Jack) that was choreographed to a throbbing electronica beat, I was about ready to pull my own samurai move and put my foot through the screen...
Okay, I know that scene is about dancing and not the music, and I'm just as keen as the next guy about rubbing my body up against hot, sweaty, nubile, young women (not that I ever do, *sigh*), it's just that the music is so vacuous. Here again, don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed a lot of electronic music. My buddy, Ranger Rick aka Alloy has done a lot of great electronic music, as has my brother. I also like William Orbit (who discovered Beth Orton for God's sake!) and others. However, I just can't understand the "oomp-sis-oomp-sis" music for hours and hours on end. I guess it's cause I don't do drugs...
Anyway, I like my songs to be songs -- they have a start and an end, crescendos, decrescendos, and climaxes. Give me an outdoor festival or a smokey honky-tonk, and let me turn off the drum-machine between songs...
