Burning CDs and Other Subversive Acts

Now, a note for the RIAA. You won't play the Reeltime Travelers or other fantastic old-time musicians on the radio. Only a couple of not-for-profit or publicly sponsored radio stations can get away with it. Guess what guys? They're still getting known, through grassroots movements, including copying CDs. (Gasp!)

A buddy gave me copies of the Travelers' CDs a couple of months ago, and I loved the CDs so much that I immediately decided to buy them both! Why? Didn't I already have the music? In your little RIAA minds, you won't believe why -- because I believe in these artists. So I bought copies directly from the band at their show and on their website, so hopefully you damned RIAA won't see a penny of my money! I hope that the Travelers get to enjoy all the proceeds of the CDs and t-shirts that I bought. It isn't much, but when you want to play music for a living because you love it, not because you're looking at making a record company millions of dollars, these little purchases can really add up (or at least I hope they do!).

This is what you record companies are afraid of most -- that "word of mouth" artists with talent will make enough money to turn people off of your plastic toy music industry -- boy bands and 16-year old sex objects.

Hear hear!

The period of my life in which I most intensely listened to music and bought CDs was when I had an online radio station. I got a ton of feedback from listeners who heard things that they hadn't heard before, and they went out and bought CDs too. In the span of a year, I bet I bought almost 100 CDs, spending tons of money. Nowadays I don't spend as much on CDs anymore, and I don't do the radio thing anymore, because fees and stupid laws have made it nearly impossible to legally have a hobby internet radio station without shelling out a godawful amount of money on top of the costs of getting new music.
