Back in the Arms of a Good Friend

Wow, just came across a blast from my past, Matthew Sweet's album Girlfriend. This album pretty much encapsulated my freshman year in high school (along with Some Friendly by the Charlatans UK). More importantly, this concert, at the beginning of my sophomore year, was the very first concert I ever went to.

Drove out to Knoxville in my little red truck, hmm, maybe I borrowed my Mom's car, with my brother Tony and our friends Ben and Kip. Drove down Cumberland to Gay Street to the Bijou Theatre. That was a seriously big deal because I'd only been driving for a couple of months on my own, and it was my first trip to Knoxville (which is a heck of a drive for a 16-year old from Maryville), not to mention downtown Knoxville. It still amazes me how cool my folks were (are, hell Dad went with me to Merlefest last year, and he's got tickets this year too!).

This was also my first concert t-shirt, with the beautiful picture of Tuesday Weld from the 1950s. I wore that thing out. Also the first in a long trend.... I'd give good money for another t-shirt like that...

Anyway, by far Girlfriend is my favorite song, followed closely by Evangeline. It's funny too, because as much as I hated Winona's country-ish sound when I was in high school, I completely love it now, of course. Funny how things change.

Anyway, just basking in the nostalgia. I gotta learn and cover Girlfriend some day....

Comments

This album is one that will never leave my collection. Not just because it's a good album, but because it reminds me of a certain boy. There have been times when I put this cd on, soak in a bath and imagine the smell of Camel Light cigarettes and a boy with the mouth of an angel.

Okay, Amy, maybe it'd be better not to know, but... "the mouth of an angel?" No, nevermind. Better not to know.

Ah the little red truck... When I think of it, I remember being crammed in there with you, (your fav) Brandi, and Kip... listening to LIFE IS A HIGHWAY... good times...
