Best of the Monkees
Posted by Larry Karnowski at May 22, 2003 10:12 AMOkay, I've mentioned before that I'm a CD-holic, haven't I? What's the worst thing you can do to a CD-holic? You encourage him in his CD buying habits. Now I've already bought like fifteen CDs in the last month (it's been a busy month since Merlefest), so what does the Racoon Fink do?
He comes up to me yesterday and says, "Just so you know, I - I - I - I - I'm not your stepping stone."
Damn. So last night I went and bought the new Best of the Monkees just released this year by Rhino Records.
Oh well, this is one of those nostalgic pleasures -- watching the Monkee re-runs with my brother on weekday mornings over summer break when we were kids. Hell, I never really thought about it until now, but I bet that watching the Monkees (combined with other sources later, most notably the movie The Commitments) really encouraged Tony and I to start a grunge band later in high school.
This has also resurrected an old idea of mine. I had realized, probably in high school, that someone should do a slow, sad, acoustic version of Daydream Believer -- just a solo singer and guitar. Then a few years ago, I heard someone doing it on one of those "Noxzema" shows that my ex loved so much -- probably Dawson or Felicity or something. But now I can't find the song!! Does anyone know what I'm talking about? It was a female singer, but I never found out who.
OMG! The Monkees are one of my all-time favs!! I have all their ALBUMS! (yes, vinyl) and bunches of cds... LOVE THEM!!! I used to love to watch the tv show and all that... YAY for the Monkees!

Now, can you hook a sister up with some BR-549 covering "Price of Love" by the Everly Brothers?
