Mercury's Blues

Posted by Larry Karnowski at September 24, 2003 11:44 AM

most people get what they deserve, baby I got you
and some people recieve what they serve, why do I get you?

some times I still get nervous, around you
like the devil when the angels are out loose

baby what did I do to deserve you?

you see I've got me these two lovers
on neither one I'll cheat

baby you would give me anything
she could be so cheap

she loves me only when I'm guiding soldiers to their doom
she's a short race at a quick pace from the womb to the tomb

so it's midnight yellow hotel
playing hell with the blues

I imagine even Mercury got weary of his wings
and I can imagine even wings can feel like weighted chains

but I know you'd never make me trade my wings
for regular walkin' shoes

the fastest way they 'come blues
is paying the dues

so for now I throw in the towel to the Mercury's blues
it's the midnight yellow hotel lights Mercury's blues
I got the midnight yellow hotel Mercury's blues

blues
blues

-- Kenny Roby (the frickin' man!)

If I was to recommend one Kenny Roby album for you to start with, I'd say get his first solo album, Mercury's Blues, which you can get on Amazon. The rest of his albums you need to get from local independent record stores or his website. God, he's good.

I've often thought of him, and yes, I know this is difficult to understand so I already regret saying it... but he's kind of the "Lyle Lovett of North Carolina..." What I mean is, imagine Lyle without the Texas, but North Carolina instead. God's that a stupid way of saying it.... anyway, I won't say anymore than that. (He's also good buddies with Scott Miller so you know he's cool!)
