Damn the Trolls

Posted by Larry Karnowski at October 13, 2003 9:20 AM

So there's a new type of spam going around -- blog spam. Evidently some enterprising folks have realized that blogs have comments -- and those comments are on web pages -- and (gasp!) that means that Google indexes them. So to get their page results higher in Google, they add bogus comments on OLD, OLD stories on my blog, thinking no one will see them but Google, I guess. The comments are asinine and usually obviously generic ("Hey, nice site, folks"). I guess they don't realize that beautiful Movable Type lets me know when a comment is added.

They've been added one-sy two-sy for the past couple of months. No biggie. I'd just go in and delete them. However, I wake up this morning (sick at home, and terribly grumpy I might add) and find FOUR of them in my inbox. Well no more. As of today, only blog entries from the last 30 days will be commentable. That means that anything you see on the main page will allow comments, anything else, sorry, but we're closed. You can see the old comments people have posted, but no new ones.

I'd tell you about what these trolls are adding to my comments (not all of them are innocently prosaic) or let you know the sites they're promoting just to let you know how bad they are, but nope. That would just fulfill their primary purpose -- have a website talking about them to up their Google scores. Screw that. Screw the trolls. This is my neighborhood, buddy. You're not going to promote porn or God-forsaken whatever else you spammer trolls promote, not on my watch! Not on MY SITE!

Calm down and take a breather, buddy. :-)

By the way, check out the awesome website at http://www.markturner.net!!!1!11!

Ah! That's appalling! Those bastards! If I ever see these troll-creators at, say, a Jayhawks show, I will WOMP them, whether they happen to be chatty or not.

WOMP!

I've had this problem as well of late - you may already be aware of it, but there is a handy solution: MT-Blacklist
