Snowed Out?

Posted by Larry Karnowski at December 20, 2003 11:36 AM

So, instead of being on the road today to head back to my parents' place (a six hour drive in good weather with no traffic), I'm instead at home. Evidently they got some snow back home in Knoxville, and in Asheville the mountains aren't looking so hot. They're very cold, in fact, and icy/snowy. So, I'm waiting until tomorrow, when the weather channel says I40 should be a much happier interstate.

So what am I doing in all this copious free time? Well, so far, wrapping presents and re-watching the LOTR! ;-) I plan on packing tonight and taking off bright and early tomorrow! I hope to catch up with all my K-town peeps this week!

I-40 is scary (but very pretty) in snow. I've been caught in two snowstorms while traveling that road and both times I couldn't all-the-way unclench my hands from steering-wheel position for a good two days.

Have a safe trip home when you do go!

Be careful bud, and enjoy your time home! Make sure to tell everyone Merry Christmas for me. Hug your mom, smooch Aunt Kay, noogie Cassidy, and give Cap'n Frank a salute for me.

Your winter I-40 drive is reminding me of R.B. Morris' "A Winter's Tale," which doesn't explicitly say it's I-40 but if it's not I'll eat my hat. I'm guessing you've heard of him since he's a Knoxville boy, too, and does some very good music. If you don't have the song, you should try to get it off iTunes or something for the drive back. Because it's about driving on I-40 (surely ...) in the snow around Christmastime and it's a very pretty song. So there.

Stacy, have you ever listened to the V-Roys? They've got a song, probably one of their best non-Scott Miller songs, called "Over The Mountain." It's completely about driving I40 through the Smokies.

"Straight up to the left of me, and nothing on the right...
Tryin' not to look around and knuckles turnin' white!"

That was me today around 2-3 o'clock!

Sarah, I'll see you soon!! And Kip, you take care, my brother. We'll talk soon!

Yes, yes, I love that V-Roys song! That's such a perfect song to describe that stretch o' road. It's SO pretty, and you want to look around and enjoy, but if you do you'll get dead. Bah.

I drove from Greenville, SC to Knoxville on Saturday morning. It took two hours to get from the west side of Asheville (where 26 hits 40) to the TN state line. I would've been a lot more unhappy about it if Fresh Air hadn't been doing an interview with They Might Be Giants. And then This American Life played Truman Capote reading his "A Christmas Memory" which made me bawl like a baby. I'm sure the other drivers thought it was the traffic doing me in.

Point of all that is, you did well to wait for your traveling.
