Shorts on Monday, Snow on Friday?

Posted by Larry Karnowski at January 9, 2004 9:44 AM

What's up with that? And why am I at work with snow on the ground?

Okay, growing up, my Dad would have this crazy survival instinct-urge to do anything and everything he could to get into work. I remember him getting my brother and I up early (and for my Dad, early is early!!! Like 5AM or earlier!) to help load up my truck with firewood so he could drive it into work. My truck! He'd get us up early to dig his truck or car out from wherever it was snowed in, usually the garage.

But I just don't have that gene. I evidently didn't inherit it. I'm more of a "well damn, should I just work from home" kindofa guy. I don't drive in the snow. I'm a Southerner, and it's against my religion. If my roommate wasn't such a damn Yankee, and if he didn't so graciously offer to carpool me to work (<groan>Thanks Ben.</groan>), then I'd probably be at home hacking instead. (Oh, and watching the fourth season of Babylon Five!) ;-)

But I guess I'm finally becoming a grown-up. *shrug* Snow doesn't necessarily mean "snow day." It's actually kind of fun though, everyone wants to tell their near-death story of making it to the office, just so everyone knows how much they risked to get in. And I want a new toy -- I'm craving a 4-wheel drive something or other. Maybe next winter.

I am working from home today ;)

Yes, I too have to be at work today as well. I don't understand what snow is for if it doesn't shut everything down. I guess I'll live.

I, too, remember Dad getting us up when the night was still fighting to hold on to the Championship Belt. I never understood his dire need to get into work. Although, in retrospect, I suppose he just didn't want to burn up any benefit time he may have had. Of course, I could be wrong, and he could just be crazy after all...

Ah... can't wait till I am an official teacher and will be eligible for "OFFICAL SNOW DAYS" again... :) (ps- HEY TONY!)

I'm just a lowly paid teachers aide, but I still say "Yeah for snow days!!" and I actually love my job and my kids. But I still love staying home when it snows. And boys your dad is crazy. He would take such chances just to get into work, and he hated, I mean hated it at ALCOA. He went into work today, and a lot of the people he works with at the base didn't! But that's him! gotta love him! Mom

he should have gone in. if i could make it in, he should have had no problems. and don't worry--we know he's crazy.

Man, I wish we had mountains of snow, but unfortunately it's just downright chilly. Sorry it's taken me so long to write you back, an official email is coming, but we've got what's called a Unit Compliance Inspection this coming week and I've been working all day everyday. Mention UCI around your dad and see if he flinches. It's like being probed by aliens. Me and Valerie considered taking up your blog offer. We'll let you know. Talk to you later

Let's not ask why Kip knows what alien probing is like. Lar-ry, can we have the pictures now? I think you should have pity on us, we've both got some kind of email impairment. And it's hard to think about plans so far ahead! Pretty please with some kind of nifty tech-na-ma-doodle on top?

Val-ler-ie, all I want to know is if we can come out to Japan or not! ;-) I need to know to get the plans going, ASAP. As soon as I get that email from you, I'll be extremely happy to send you the pics! :-P

Now write some email! [insert whip-crack sound here]

No one here (DC, or as I like to call it, the frozen North) seems to understand my Southern-bred panic at snowy roads. So I'm glad you do! Staying at (or working from) home isn't an option, and when I do somehow get to work, they care not for my life-risking stories, so I don't even get that satisfaction.

And they think that panic-buying milk and bread (or, really, tortilla chips and beer) is weird.

Psh.
