Come and Go Grace
Posted by Larry Karnowski at August 10, 2004 10:44 AMBy Tift Merritt
You came along like sunrise
Took me into your eyes
said "darlin', let's go find ourselves some grace"
I followed you, believin'
where ever you were leadin'
we'd circle round and find a cold dry place
you sang me like an old song
played me back again
turned me round about
hold me close again
my head was turnin' circles
the band was keepin' time
oh but you, you were just makin' up your mind
(chorus)
so darlin', dance real slow
the world's givin' 'way
you spin me around again
in the come and go grace
well I know the song has ended
and my dizzy heart has mended
but you show up now, for a refrain
I don't know what you're hopin'
the world is broken open
but you keep them still, just like it was the same
remember when I thought
the worst was over
remember when I thought
the west the won
remember when you left
all I had was nothin'
but the grace, you left behind
that was how I carried on
(chorus)
so darlin', dance real slow
the world's givin' away
I'm spinning round again,
in the come and go grace
sing me like an old song
play me back again
turn me inside out
pull me right back in
the sky is turnin' circles
the lights are movin' past
oh this time, please don't spin me
round so fast
(chorus)
darlin', dance real slow
so the world won't give away
But you spin me round again,
I'm spinnin' round again,
spinnin' round again
in the come and go grace
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, ever. Good luck finding a copy, and no, I won't send you one. You'll have to find it yourself.
This is a simple song, just Tift and her guitar, and it just breaks your heart the way she sings. I don't think anyone could ever play it as well.
I've always loved this song, but with Tift's album coming out in a couple of weeks, I thought it appropriate to post the lyrics. Plus, since this is a very rare song to find, I'm not sure that anyone else has sat down and transcribed it. So here's my work for posterity (along with the Wagon Wheel lyrics!).
One of the best songs you've ever heard and "good luck finding a copy?" That's just mean, Larry. Just plain ol' mean.

Posted by: Stacy at August 11, 2004 8:20 AMLook, there are CERTAIN people (like Val and Stacy), who of course get free reign to my record collection, no questions asked.
But I get ALOT of STRANGERS asking me for music, and my policy is incredibly simple -- if I don't know you, I don't share with you. If I can't trust you to DO THE RIGHT THING and support the artist, then go away. So I say, "No, I won't send it to you." ;-)
Fair enough?
Posted by: larry at August 11, 2004 8:33 AMLarry, did you see that Tift got a review in Entertainment Weekly last week? A favorable one at that...
