Whiskeytown Quickies

First off, I didn't reply to a comment Suzy left the other day. (Sorry Suzy!) Yes, I have listened to Caitlin Cary's stuff, and I almost knocked her into a toilet at a house concert a couple of years ago! Hmm, have to tell that story later.

I recommend her EP, Waltzie. It's great. She does a wonderful cover of Richard and Linda Thompson's Withered and Died which is beautiful. Her second album, While You Weren't Looking, is pretty good. The song with Thad Cockrell, Thick Walls Down, is great! Her last album, I'm Staying Out, was not very good, I thought. It was too pop-sounding. I recommend avoiding it.

Second quickie: You might remember that earlier I spotted Whiskeytown Stranger's Almanac posters on the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Well, I was rewatching parts of it last night, and I narrowed it down. The first time I saw them (maybe the only time? I don't think so) was the I Only Have Eyes For You episode on season two. There are least three different posters in prominent scenes throughout the episode. You can't miss them. They're directly behind the camera, usually between two major characters.

Lastly, the Caitlin/toilet story. Okay, I went to my first Thad Cockrell show a while back ago. It was a house concert in Durham, and Caitlin was guest-starring. I didn't know what she looked like, and she didn't play during the first set. Well, during the last song of the first set, this little short woman gets up from the front row and ducks into the bathroom. When the set ended, I was pretty close to that bathroom, so I got there first. I was standing in line with two other guys, waiting for her to come out. She opens the door, not looking, and quickly runs out into the room, almost colliding with me. She stops herself suddenly, rocking back on her feet.

This is funny, because I have this image of her burned in my head. She's rocking back on her heels, kinda flailing her arms around trying to get her balance. She's a short woman, and the bathroom was small, and I remember thinking if she fell back she was going to bust her head on the the toilet seat! I reached out to steady her, and everything was cool. I still had no clue who she was.

Then the second set starts, Thad says, "I'd like to welcome Caitlin Cary up to sing with me for a bit," and this little woman jumps up!
