Country Stars on Indie Labels
Posted by Larry Karnowski at March 2, 2004 2:49 PMI'm sure you've all witnessed this too, but it's nice to see an article about it, even if it's on that damn M$ site. This article talks about major country stars, namely Dolly Parton and Dwight Yoakam, moving to smaller independent labels for better deals and more creative control. I like that it mentioned Sugar Hill (here in Durham!) and Rounder. Both are two of my favorite labels.
I also consider Lost Highway a bit of an Indie, although of course they're really part of a larger company. They run their business much like an indie label though, and of course have some of the best true country acts out there. Let's see... Ryan Adams, Tift Merritt, Lyle Lovett, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, the O Brother albums, the Jayhawks, Lucinda Wilson, and on and on. I thought they had Robert Earl Keen too, but evidently I was wrong.
Go Sugar Hill (Scott Miller and Dolly and Nickel Creek and Doc Watson and Tim O'Brien)!!! Go Rounder (Alison Krauss and too many other Bluegrass artists to mention)!!! And go Amy for giving me the link.
