Cash Movie In The Works

Posted by Larry Karnowski at March 22, 2004 12:30 PM

Thanks to James for the link about the status of the Johnny Cash biographical movie, Walk The Line.

They've got Joaquin Phoenix playing the Man In Black, and my initial reaction was that they were crazy. After a little more thought, however, I'm thinking he'd really be able to pull it off -- depending on how they do his voice. I'm guessing people first cringed when they heard Sissy Spacek was going to play Loretta Lynn, huh? But boy did that work out! Also, Joaquin's IMDB profile photo actually makes him look like a younger Cash already. Reese Witherspoon as June might be a farther stretch, but again, I think she'll pull it off. It'll definitely have some star-power, anyway.

Cool, I'm hoping Walk The Line and Gram Theft Parsons are both tasteful and well-made films that I can add to my collection of favorite music-biography films including Coal Miner's Daughter (oh yeah!) and The Buddy Holly Story.

Am I missing any? What're your favorites?

Comments

I had a brief but intense obsession with VH1's John Denver movie (Chad Lowe as JD, Kristen Davis as Annie). I probably shouldn't admit that, though.

The new documentary on Steve Earle ("Just an American Boy")is worth seeing, but just know the camera work is waaaaaaay bad.

Sid And Nancy, which they are remaking with Courtney Love. It's not set in stone yet but a to be honest the shoe kinda fits Courtney.

Man, I can't stand Courtney Love. She's only famous because of who she slept with!! Did you catch her on letterman last week. She needs to be locked up!! anyway, Jessica Lange did a movie several years ago about Patsy Cline. It was pretty good. Can't remember the name, it came out after Coal Miners Daughter.Seems like it was I fall to pieces or something like that. Oh and what about all of thoes sucky movies about the life of Elvis !!

Best movie with Elvis as a character? Bubba Ho-Tep. I'm dead serious. Bruce Campbell actually makes Elvis a person, a character, instead of a caricature.

I saw a piece on Headline News today about the Cash film. They had the sound muted though (I was at lunch) and the closed captioning called him "The Man in Plaque."

Bruce Campbell is an under appreciated cinematic god.

I sincerely thought about adding Bubba Ho-Tep to the list, but since it wasn't a "real" music-biography, I had to let it skip. ;-) I loved it though! And yes, Bruce Campbell is WAY under-appreciated.

not exactly a biopic, but a beautiful little film straight outta nashville, featuring joaquin's brother river in his last completed role -

Play the game! Bruce does the voices, and though the game isn't much of a challenge, it's rather amusing. Keith, Caleb had an instructor in MS who was going over weapons...he said "Airmen...This...This is a Boomstick" and Caleb was the only one to get it. I at least taught him something. Sorry...I'll shush now.

Oh yes, "Thing Called Love" is a good one! Also, duh, "Spinal Tap," if we're allowed to delve into the world of fake.
