Carolina In The Fall

Posted by Larry Karnowski at May 12, 2004 8:59 AM

By the Krüger Brothers

All the places I have been to
All the things that I have seen
Since I left my home to wander
When I was just fifteen

Though the travelin' was easy
Still sometimes the road got rough
And by the time that I turned thirty-five
I thought I'd seen enough

But for me to settle down awhile
Was not what God had planned
So one more time I left my home
With suitcase in my hand

Oh the journey took me far and wide
Across the deep blue sea
And now I know since I've been there
Where I was meant to be

I've seen sunsets on the ocean
I've seen the desert bloom
I've driven endless highways
Beneath the prairie moon

Yet the picture in my mind that I see
When I think about it all
Is the color of the leaves
In Carolina in the Fall

Now for thirty years I've played the songs
That Doc has taught to me
And the things that he has sung about
I never thought I'd see

In the hills of Carolina
Folks have opened up the door
And for the first time in my life
I'm not a stranger anymore

I've seen sunsets on the ocean
I've seen the desert bloom
I've driven endless highways
Beneath the prairie moon

Yet the picture in my mind I see
When I think about it all
Is the color of the leaves
In Carolina in the Fall

Yet the picture in my mind I see
When I think about it all
Is the color of the leaves
In Carolina in the Fall

Okay, I know it's actually Spring right now, but this is such a pretty song. It still gives me chills every time I listen to it!

The Krüger Brothers, Uwe (oo-vey) and Jens (yens), are amazing Bluegrass musicians from Switzerland. They grew up listening to Doc Watson albums, especially Uwe who has the Doc-style down so well that he's probably the only person I might ever mistake for Doc on a recording, and so they sort of fell in love with North Carolina from afar. They've spent a lot of time over here and just recently moved to Wilkesboro. ("We finally got it all moved over -- the dogs, the guitars, the girls, AND the women." -- Uwe)

This song always gets BIG cheers here in North Carolina. ;-)

Not to take anything away from the Kruger Brothers, because I love this song too. But I just wanted to know if you were aware that Loretta Lynn has a new album coming out tomorrow, that she did with Jack Black. They played a litte bit from it on the River this morning, it sounded like it would be worth checking out. Love you.

Thanks Mom! Yep, it actually came out the Tuesday before we went to Merlefest, and I picked it up -- "Van Lear Rose". It's pretty good. I wasn't sure at first, but it's growing on me. I should've done a review.

Also, it's Jack White, not Jack Black, of the White Stripes. But we knew who you meant. ;-)

I'd pay some cash money though to hear Loretta sing with Jack Black. Wow... the commercial opportunity THAT would be...

I wish someone could send me this Carolina in the Fall song. I am stuck up in college in New England and want to hear this song. I'm from Carolina and miss it so and would love to hear it!!! JUV_EAK@yahoo.com
