I Want My, I Want My, I Want My Oculan

Posted by Larry Karnowski at May 20, 2004 11:37 PM

Oculan is dead. They shut their doors today. We moved our stuff out, and then we left. I've spent the past few hours hanging out and comiserating our new unemployment (along with a few beers).

I've spent over three years here, with the brightest and most talented people I've ever met. We had a kick-ass product that was winning awards hand over fist. We had a new release that was going to put the world at our feet. How did they decide to cut the funding? Why now?

I don't know... I'm freaking out a little. I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but I know I'll be fine -- eventually. I've planned for this day, and I think I'll be fine. But I don't want to leave my friends at work, and I don't want to give up the incredible product I've worked so hard on for SO LONG. It's difficult giving up something that has taken up so much of my life for the last three years.

It hasn't even really sunk in yet that I don't have a job. I've never been unemployed before....

You could always come back to Knoxville!

Posted by: Becki Grace at May 21, 2004 9:09 AM

Well, two things have to happen before I can move back to Knoxville:
1) I have to finish out my lease at the House of Bastardville. I can't leave Ben R hanging on that.
2) Knoxville has to get some decent IT jobs.

Posted by: larry at May 21, 2004 9:12 AM

Wow, I'm sorry this happened ... sounds like you knew it was coming, but sheesh. What was your product?

What's your area of IT expertise? Might want to check into Veritas's Durham office?

Posted by: Cindy at May 21, 2004 9:30 AM

Man, I feel for you. If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to ask.

I've been freaking out for you... I know you'll be fine (you always are), but it's never fun to be in a situation like this. Again, anything I can do I will be glad of.

Take care, and I love you, my brother.

It really does bite don't it? This is the second time I've been laid off, and it looks like I'm going to go back to the company I originally got laid off FROM! Ironic aint it. Good luck to you man. We'll keep in touch.

Well, I'm taking a lesson from Office Space. What is it you ask? Strychnine in the panang curry! No, wouldn't want to bring down Thai Villa with us. Seriously, I think I'm leaving the computer programming industry. Enough of the bullshit. Something in the construction trades is sounding really good right now. Huge salary cut (at least for the next 5 or so years) but I'm single and still rather young, and aspiring to be white trash anyway!

Larry please let me know if you want me to send your resume in - Scripps is an awesome place to work!

Posted by: sarah at May 21, 2004 4:37 PM

I have to say it son, seems like a sign to me!! I really hate it for you. I know how much you loved it there and the people you work with. This really sucks. What will Shane do? and Ben? Oh well, I know you will land on your feet, you always do, and you have had an idea this might happen. There may be an even better job just around the corner waiting just for you. Keep your chin up. I love you, and remember, you can always move back home! (you knew I had to say it!! I can't help it, I'm a mom!)

Posted by: Mom at May 21, 2004 6:04 PM

Yikes, Larry, I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you find something new (and as good) soon.

It IS festival season, you know, you could follow the Sam Bush Band around and sell grilled cheese in the parking lot ...

Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2004 6:34 PM

Indeed it does suck, but you've always had a natural good fortune(attributable to your hard work and persaverence, but still mysterious at times), so I'm sure things will work out.

You can always come work with me.....

Posted by: Kip at May 21, 2004 10:21 PM

Yeah, Larry... The Air Force is the answer to all your questions.

Good Lord, I'm kidding. We're finally about to get Kip back. We can't have anyone else running off to join...

Well, Seth's just in the guard; it's not the same thing...

Forget Knoxville, and any other city east of Portales, NM. Go west Lawrence, feel the pioneer spirit in your blood. The same spirit that brought your ancestors from Poland to this land to forge a new life. The tech corridor from San Diego to LA is booming. 95% of the video game industry is there as well. You have Mountains for hiking, or skiing. The majestic Pacific ocean. The desolate and awe inspiring deserts. Friendly, and beautiful people abound. California Larry, thats were you belong.I'm Getting all teary eyed just thinking about it. However I do have connections with various tech companies that are DOD contracted. If your into travel and working for the GOV let me know. The worst case scenario is you would have to relocate to VA Beach. Any way if you want I can contact them, I'm not sure what you area of expertise is, but they are always willing to train.

House of Bastardville??? Please clarify!

Posted by: no name at May 24, 2004 1:21 PM

Since you have some free time...post on our reunion ;)

Posted by: sarah at May 24, 2004 3:30 PM

O'kay, who the hell is this urpster person and why on earth would they tell you to go to California??? Is that Everett? anyway, don't listen to him son. You don't want to go to that awful place.

Posted by: Mom at May 24, 2004 4:07 PM

Oh how dumb am I? I remember its Keith. But still, don't listen to him Larry.

Posted by: Mom at May 24, 2004 4:08 PM

You're already too far away, screw Cali! If you're gonna move hit up Nevada or something, that way when Cali breaks off into the ocean you'll have nice new oceanfront property :) I'm weird I know it. But you helped develop me this way!!!

Posted by: Cassidy at May 25, 2004 12:47 AM

Sorry. Job loss is never good (this coming from an ex-Arthur Andersen employee). I'm sending good thoughts your way.

Posted by: fairmaiden at May 26, 2004 1:58 PM

Larry I'm clueless as to what you do exactly and what you want to do. But there is an IT opening at ORNL right now. Come over to the dark side!! call me if you want more details at [removed by Larry] or call my home number get it from your mom or dad

Posted by: Tom Karnowski at May 27, 2004 11:20 AM

You know, Larry, this may be a good time to consider graduate school too...

Posted by: Tom Karnowsk at May 27, 2004 11:32 AM

Good point Tom, larry would look good with a grad school degree :)

Posted by: Cassidy at May 27, 2004 4:45 PM

Oh, hell. I ignore the computer for a few days and Urpster runs amok. Tech Corridor, like the one that runs along the Ganges? Urp may not realize this yet, but we're retiring back home. Yeah, that's a long ways off, but I'm hoping to take advantage of our proximity to Hawaii before too long. Always an ulterior motive, you know. Frankly, Larry, I'd take this opportunity to go globe-hopping. Then I could live vicariously some more (read: Merlefest.) Seriously, some unfettered adventure is definitely in order. Plenty of time to get fettered later.

Posted by: Shannon at May 28, 2004 1:21 AM

Sure as long we can retire back home. After you retire. When I retire I refuse to move any further east than New Mexico. Home is California now. What could possibly draw you back to TN after living in paradise. Besides Aiden would not allow it. You know you don't want to face the wrath his of our first born.

Further more shouldn't you be updating your blog. I don't recall the date on it. Just the title "This is Living". So everyone must now harass Shannon until she posts a new blog. Even Ben has updated more often, that my dear is unsat.

what is shannon's blog address?

Posted by: frank at May 29, 2004 9:38 AM

She's the Ballad Salad link on my blogroll. http://balladsalad.blogdrive.com/

And Keith/Urpster... what in the name of all that's Holy makes you love CA so much? I gotta tell you, I wasn't impressed when I was out there. Too many people, all trying like mad to be "cool." It really rubbed me the wrong way. If I was ever to go left-coast, I was much more attracted by the cool coffee-shop scene and green mountains of Oregon and Washington. But since that's the lair of evil (M$ makes its foul nest in Redmond, ewww), I sincerely doubt that'll ever happen either.

No, I see North Carolina or maybe Virginia for the foreseeable future, such as it is. We'll see.

Posted by: larry at May 29, 2004 9:47 AM

Ooooh, yay Virginia! Really, I live in fake Virginia (D.C. area), but the actual Virginia is nice from what I can tell. Troubling lack of Sonics, but otherwise pretty swell.

Posted by: Stacy at May 29, 2004 12:59 PM

No Larry, friends don't let friends live in Virginia. I loath the "Commonwealth". Trust me, you do not want to live there. I would rather soak in gasoline and set myself ablaze, then move back to that foul hole. Mind you I am having a really tough time speaking this civil about Virginia. I will leave it at that.

Posted by: urpster at May 29, 2004 3:10 PM

Virginia is the best. Lots of bluegrass festivals, too. It's the place to be, I've been here my whole life, all over the state. If that's where you end up, you'll love it.

Posted by: John at May 30, 2004 1:56 AM

Wow, Larry. That's harsh. You're welcome to come down to Charleston and look around. Then again, this IS south Carolina...I mean, when Alabama can make fun of your school system...

Seriosuly, though. Stacy is right about it being festival season. Bonnaroo is fast approaching. Go to the fabric store. Buy some really cheap material. Mark the price up like 500%. And then tell all the hippies that it's hemp. You'll make thousands. Or at least high hundreds.

Good luck with the job search.

STAY OUT OF THE COMMONWEALTH!!!!! As a current Va resident I do not reccomend it to anyone, except maybe my worst enemies. The cops as asses the lawas are messed up and they are so in debt right now they'd give you a ticket for jaywalking. It is beautiful, but this beauty comes at a price. Leave Va for visiting only.
