The Old Country

Posted by Larry Karnowski at June 11, 2004 11:13 PM

I'm going over my over-flowing inbox, trying to catch back up, and I rediscovered this really cool pic that Suzy Q sent me a little while back. (Sorry, to take so long, Suzy!) It's a neat shopfront picture from a book about LIthuania. Maybe a distant relative of mine? I love stuff like this!

Tony, yep, it's a "Y". If you click on the pic you'll get a bigger version of it.

There are many other spellings of our name. Here's the derivations I've seen so far:

Karnowski
Karnowsky
Karnofski
Karnofsky
Karnovski
Karnovsky

I suspect our pronunciation of our name -- "car" "now" "ski", is actually an Americanization. I bet the original sounded more like this -- "car" "nov" "ski", with the "o" in "nov" sounding like the "o" in "off."

I prefer the original Tennessee pronunciation, though -- "Cornwhiskey"!!

By the way, Tony, have you Googled for "karnowski" lately? ;-)

Someone's squatting on cornwhiskey.com, damnit.
