Todo: Buy Me Some Robert Earl
Posted by Larry Karnowski at July 27, 2004 10:27 PMGood Lord, how have I gone this long without owning any Robert Earl Keen stuff? JEEZ! He rocked my world before the DMB show last night!
He completely broke the very real and longstanding curse of the DMB opening act. It seems that no matter who it was that opened for Dave in the several times I saw him in college, I'd always hate them. HATE them. Even good bands, like Los Lobos. I HATED them when they opened for him. Like vomit-inducing hate.
But ol Robert Earl kicked that one. Kicked it good.
I keep thinking of all the Lyle songs by or about Robert Earl. The best two that immediately come to mind are This Old Porch and Record Lady.
"Robert Earl, is a friend of mine... He's always lookin' out for my best interests."
"But Robert, I don't need no records..."
"This old porch is like a steamin', greasy plate of enchiladas... with lots of cheese and onions, and guacamole salad." (WTF? I love this song!!)
Oh yeah. That's right.
And don't forget San Antonio Girl:
"Out on Highway 16, we heard ol' Robert Keen"
Robert Earl Keen rocks. Rawks, even. He shoved me once after a show in Greenville, because he was trying to get at the venue manager I was talking with to scream at him about something. Very exciting. Carlton was there, can back me up on this.
REK's best album, in my opinion, is "Picnic." "Gravitational Forces" isn't as good, and I hear the new one is ... weird.
