Grey Day Mood
Posted by Larry Karnowski at September 16, 2004 10:25 AMSo today is a grey sortofa day, overcast and bleak. I actually like grey days like this, at least this time of year. I just finished listening to Stephen King's The Gunslinger audiobook, and I'm reading Tony's book. Both of these share the same sort of bleak, grey sorta-day setting and mood. Plus, I've been working on plans for our Halloween party at the HOB.
So what's the point of all this? Well, I'm in a sort of cool Halloween mood, even though it's way too early for it. So what am I listening to today? Neko Case's Blacklisted. It's a great, dark, almost gothic, but sexy, twangy, haunted album. It's so cool!
"the buildings are empty
like ghettos of ghost-towns
it gives me a chill to think what was inside
I can't seem to fathom the dark of my history
I invented my own in Tacoma..."
-- from Thrice All American
"the tv is blaring and angry
as if you don't know why you're here
those who walk without sin are so hungry
don't let the wolves in pretty girl
your heart is so trite and so innocent
wind your flimsy blue gowns tied around you
around curves so comely and sinister
they blame it on you pretty girl"
-- from Pretty Girls
And don't get me started on Things That Scare Me ("the hammer clicks in place, the world's gonna pay") or Deep Red Bells ("those like you who lost their way,
murdered on the interstate, while the red bells rang like thunder "). The former is a spooky Revelations-style hymnal that would make Johnny Cash shiver, and the latter is an eerie ode to the Green River Killer. Brrr... Damn good songs, though!
Dude, don't bogart that Neko Case...
