Right Turn Clydes

Posted by Larry Karnowski at January 19, 2005 11:12 AM

Well, my merry band of Bluegrass friends, the Right Turn Clydes, played our first truly public appearance last night -- a three-song open mic deal at the Six String Cafe. I say "truly public" because we played a Christmas show at a little retirement home last month. (I never knew so many little old ladies requested Johnny Cash songs!)

I think we played pretty well, but of course we made some mistakes. The crowd seemed to like us, especially since we were a change from the "single singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar" formula that made up the majority of the other acts. We had a great time playing.

We ended up playing around one condenser mic, kinda old-school Bluegrass if you know what I mean. I can't get over how well that single mic worked... oh, yeah, here's some recordings if you're interested!

Lonesome Pine - Our first song, when we didn't understand the mic at all, unfortunately. Pat does a great job of singing this one, though!

Rocky Top - With James singing!

Wagon Wheel - With me singing.

Biggest mistake of the night -- James and I stepping outside to tune (in below-freezing weather), stepping back inside, and our instruments going completely haywire out of tune. Man that scared me! DUMB! We won't make that mistake again.

Second biggest mistake -- me being way too timid on my fiddle playing. I stayed way back away from the mic, even during my solos, so you can't hear me at all. And when you do hear me... I just sound timid and weak. (My solo just fades out in Rocky Top, even though I definitely finished it.)

Biggest geek moment -- me sitting on the couch at the Six String with my iBook, ripping the CD they burned for Pat and then uploading it to the blog. ;-)

Second biggest geek moments -- Shane and my jokes just aren't funny. ;-)

Update: Note that my ISP is currently being hit very badly by blog spammers, and they've had to turn off all my comments. I'm currently in the process of fixing this, so bear with me. Also note that because of this extra server load, downloading from this site can be slow. This could be especially painful for people downloading large files, like oh, say, the mp3s listed above. Please bear with me. ;-)

Update: Okay, I've got comments working again. I think I'm going to upgrade MT this weekend. Also, the server load is still bad, so downloading will probably still be slow. Sorry. Patience, young padawan.

Comments

Whew, got comments working again. Damn blog spammers. I'm SO upgrading my MovableType this weekend. You just wait.

That's great, man! Don't worry about being timid, you'll get over that with more experience. Playing in front of people is always a little scary, but exhilirating at the same time. I'm glad you had fun!

Will the MT upgrade effect all the blogs on your server?

Posted by: tony at January 20, 2005 9:13 AM

Yep, the MT upgrade will affect them all, including yours Tony. Although I've done some reading, and I might not need to upgrade after all. I still probably will, though, especially if it snows this weekend. It costs $100 to upgrade though, so I've been putting it off.

Had a great time on Tuesday and I played Heather the mp3s last night. She thinks you have a good singing voice. So, when does the band play again? Were they smart enough to ask you back?

Sorry about the 3 trackbacks when it should have been 1. Movable Type can be so dumb at times (first my mistake and then its). I first linked to the story and then trackbacked as well which caused the first two. When I re-edited the story to explain my mistake, it pinged you again on the save :(

Sometimes I think trackbacks are more pain than their worth (starting to see trackback spam as well, but luckily not on my site)

No worries, Bill. I think I fixed your Trackback woes on this story. ;-)

And tell Heather "thank you very much" for the compliment! We're hoping to play again in a few weeks. No word on that yet. I'll be sure to post a note.

Biggest geek moment : Mike in an attempt to impress a woman started a joke with "Ok, there is this Data Structure...."

Sweet tunes Larry.

You guys have a CD?

Ok, I emailed you, but now that comments are working, I figure I can embarass you in public.

I'm here checking that your open mic night actually was the 18th... scarry to think someone might think Larry is cute.

Nope, I'm pretty darn sure that's not me she's talking about. ;-) I definitely didn't play that well, and we were in Cary, not North Raleigh. I checked around though, and I can't figure out any Bluegrass concerts that day. I have no clue what she's talking about.

Our bluegrass group, "Orange Beach Special", had our first public performance last week at the Orange Beach United Methodist Church,in Alabama. We also played in an "assisted living facility in Pensacola, Fla. a few months back. Our experiences sound amazingly similar. Good luck to you and your band. Ray Sasser

Cool Ray! I'm always glad to hear of new Bluegrass and Americana bands starting up. That just means there's more of a market for our band to play too! (And more folks to jam with, more importantly!)

My boyfriend spends too much time on websites like this. I hate all those sources! They must be abandoned!

Humph. Someone has to force me to read this post. It's too big and boring. Brevity is the sister of talent, remember that.
