Best of 2004, #30: Portland Oregon by Loretta Lynn
Posted by Larry Karnowski at May 10, 2005 10:01 PMLoretta Lynn's new "Van Lear Rose" album was much-anticipated and very well-received. She won a grammy for best Country Album and another for this very song ("Best Country Collaboration With Vocals"). I liked the album a lot especially since I was a big Loretta and Jack White fan before this -- and so this was like a musical Reese's Cup. However, with all the other great music from last year, this song is the only mention of Loretta in my top 30 of 2004.
She played this song at Merlefest with some guy who couldn't decide if he wanted to be Travis Tritt or Fabio. Her parts of the duet were good at least!
I love that song!!! I love seeing Loretta out and about in those great dresses and singing a wonderful song.
Posted by: Cassidy at May 14, 2005 1:16 PMThe week leading up to Merlefest, I convinced myself that Jack White was going to make a surprise appearance with Loretta. I just KNEW IT IN MY BONES. So you can imagine how devastated I was when that guy sang "Portland, Oregon" with her. Oh god, it broke my heart! Only repeated playings of "Have Mercy" will flush the memory of it out of my system.
