Best of 2004, #27: Wish I Knew by Grant Lee Phillips

This is one of many recommendations by my friends and readers. Suzy Q recommended some Grant Lee Phillips to me early in 2004, especially his version of our namesake, "Hickory Wind."

This was the best song that I heard from his latest album, "Virginia Creeper", full of fiddle fills and violin flourishes. Those are always sure to get my attention! His subject matter gives me a William Faulkner "Southern Gothic" sort of feel, but with occassional beams of sunshine to scare away those haunted Southern blues. This song in particular is upbeat but rather wistful.
