Country Got Soul
Posted by Larry Karnowski at May 11, 2005 9:52 PMSo I'm spending my evening doing a hundred things at once, but one of those things is going through each song on the two Country Got Soul UK import albums. I'm trying to figure out for each one if it's an R&B/Soul song, a Blues song, or an "Americana" song. I'll let you know. ;-)
I've got a few sketchy reports on these albums from my European friend who turned me on to them, and I've read a bit on Allmusic.com and Amazon.com. It seems these are collections of rare and obscure soul songs done by white Southern singers. There's really not much country about it, but for a bunch of white folks, they sure got some soul. Both albums were released only in the UK and available here in the States only as imports. Volume One was released in 2003 and Volume 2 in 2004. They both won awards in the UK.
These albums are a mixed bag. For the most part they're both fairly strong, with a few out-right duds (ye Gods that Muscle Shoals song sucks!), but balanced by a few outright five-star songs. The Townes Van Zandt song, Black Widow Blues, is by far my favorite of the two albums. My band, the Right Turn Clydes, has been covering it for months. ;-)
I really like both of the Sandra Rhodes songs. They're very reminiscent of that "Pulp Fiction" hit, Son Of A Preacher Man, by Dusty Springfield.
And if you're in the mood for some 70s quasi-swamp music, semi-porno soundtrack dirty groove, then hook up those two Larry Jon Wilson songs in your playlist. If the first thirty seconds of Sheldon Churchyard doesn't do it for you... then I don't know what will.
