If you love something, sometimes you have to set it free
Posted by Stacy Chandler at May 15, 2005 10:11 PMWhich really sucks if that something you love is live music.
When I moved to Tokyo last fall, I did so knowing that the move meant far fewer opportunities to attend concerts by my favorite bands. Missing out on shows was second on the list of drawbacks only to the factor of being on the opposite side of the world from my hometown, family and friends, and sweet tea and barbecue. But, consoling myself with CDs and several pieces of music-themed art for my new apartment, I headed to Japan anyway, and I tried not to think about the shows I was missing.
(I missed Steve Earle and the Old 97s by just a few weeks, and it was a rough day for me when I was 7000 miles away from most of Gary Louris and Mark Olson's tour stops. But like I said, I, um, wasn't dwelling on all that. No, not at all.)
Live shows aren't completely out of the question here. But Americana (or whatever) bands seldom have the resources or fan base to tour in Asia, so gigs are rare. And when a non-Japanese act does make it over here – Yo La Tengo and Jack Johnson have dates here this month, and Kaki King was here not too long ago – ticket prices are steep, usually at least $60, and that's for a club show.
So I stay home, maybe dance around in my living room a little to my Old Crow Medicine Show CD. It's no substitute for the real thing, but I take what I can get.
Without live shows and far from my network of friends with similar musical tastes, it's easy to lose touch with the Americana (or whatever) music scene. I read music magazines and try to keep up with my favorite bands' Web sites, but every now and then I still get surprised by a new CD that's hit stores in the States, but somehow missed my radar.
But I do manage to get by – with a little help from my friends. Thank God for e-mail, hooray for the Internet. My friends aren't shy about sending me an e-mail demanding I direct my attention to some new (or old) release they've discovered, and my CD collection and mental health are better off for it. General music Web sites and certain blogs help me keep tabs on things, too.
Certain blogs … like this one. We here at Hickory Wind hope to be that friend who can recommend a CD – or save you the trouble of buying one. If you miss a live show (sigh …), my cohorts here may just make you feel like you were there after all. And when you get the itch to tell the world about how much your favorite band's new CD rocks, pull up a chair and join the chat. Because there's no such thing as "sick of talking about music" here.
Well said! I have to tell new people I meet, "well, I like to talk, especially about music... you just tell me when to shut up!" This site was kindofa about that at first... a place where people couldn't tell me to shut up! Buwahahaha!
I lived in Osaka for 2 years and felt very much the same way you did, but you have to look at the positives.
There are a lot of CDs that are only released in Japan, and most are released in Japan with bonus tracks or are limited editions.
When I got back to the UK I found that my Japanese versions were even quite valuable as they were considered IMPORTS of course.
I recently digatised my whole collection and made quite a bit of money on my Japanese purchases

Lemme ask you -- how did you keep track of the only-in-Japan releases? Did you prowl on artist Web sites (though it seems like lots of non-Japanese artists tend to keep the only-in-Japan releases somewhat hush-hush)? Or is there some central Web site that lists things like that? Or did you dig around in Tower/HMV and just chance upon things?
