Best of 2004, #24: Greeting Card Aisle by Sarah Harmer
Posted by Larry Karnowski at May 19, 2005 10:07 PMOne of my favorite singer songwriters from the burgeoning Vancouver music scene, Sarah Harmer's first album, You Were Here, was about as good as they come. The song Lodestar is a five-star song if ever there was one. If you hear that song and don't get chill bumps, you're either tone-deaf or dead.
Her second album, All Of Our Names, didn't touch me quite as much. Most of the songs really didn't speak to me. Oh well, Sarah and I have just moved into different parts of our lives, I guess. However, I really dig this song, Greeting Card Aisle. It's an altogether great song on an otherwise fairly mediocre album.
What? What??? No love for "Pendulums"?
I agree that this album is maybe a notch or two down from "You Were Here," but Sarah has many, many notches to fall before she even gets bumped down one category from "incredibly friggin' awesome."
Also, I highly recommend, if anyone has opportunity, to catch her live. While her CDs are fairly mellow, her live show is energetic and a lot of fun.
Posted by: Stacy at May 19, 2005 11:52 PMNope, no love for "Pendulums." Doesn't speak to me, sorry.
Posted by: larry at May 20, 2005 11:11 AMany chance of putting some sound bytes of all these songs you are talking about, or is that a copyright infringement?
Posted by: frank at May 20, 2005 12:42 PMDefinitely a copyright infringement. I will however, be adding links to the ones you can get in iTunes soon, hopefully this weekend. That'll let you preview the song for free and/or buy it for $1.
Posted by: larry at May 20, 2005 12:54 PMAfter going back to that new album I realized I do, however, have some serious love for "Took It All" and a bit for "Almost."
Posted by: larry at May 20, 2005 1:02 PMFor what it is worth, I am so glad that I heard from Sarah and hooked up with you guys again. Because of some of your recommendations, I am discovering all sorts of new artists that otherwise I would have never heard of...given that it has only been in the last couple of years that I have discovered "real" music. For the dude asking about samples, go to Amazon.com, most of the stuff Larry refers to is out on the site with MP3 samples...most of them 30 seconds. Thanks for your insight and love of music Larry!
Posted by: Waylon at May 20, 2005 2:15 PMI re-listened to the album, too, after reading your post. And I was going to harass you about "Almost," but I see you've found the error of your ways on that one already. :) I also dig "Silver Road" a little more every time I hear it.
Posted by: Stacy at May 21, 2005 2:32 AMIs WDVX a great radio station or what? Yesterday afternoon on the way home I was listening (as usual) and they played a set that included Robbie Fulks' song 'Georgia Hard' followed by Ryan Adams' new song 'Let It Ride'.
Posted by: frank at May 21, 2005 11:18 AMI've never been a full-time resident of Knoxville, just a frequent visitor, but even I know that WDVX is a friggin' great radio station. I've lived in much bigger towns with 78 radio stations each, none of which could hold a candle to tiny, adorable WDVX.
