Dreams of Telluride

It seems like this time of year every year I dream of going to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. I'm back from Merlefest, flushed with that heady festival feeling and terribly hungry for more. I think about how nice it feels outside this time of year, how I've never been to Colorado, I've never even seen the Rockies outside of a jet airplane, and lastly I think about poor Jerry Douglass and Sam Bush. How those guys must miss me!

And then I start crunching numbers, looking at flight itineraries, thinking about camp sites, and the folks I'd jam with... and from that ruby-colored haze I realize it'll take at least $1,000 dollars to get me to Colorado, plus at least one day of vacation I don't have. Sigh.

This time of year all my dreams of Telluride just get washed away. Thankfully, though, there's lots of good concerts coming up here in North Carolina to drown those dreams. I'm seeing Alison Krauss this weekend. (I guess Jerry won't miss me as much as I thought!) Ryan Adam's unbelievable return to Carolina is just around the corner, and you can better believe I won't miss that! And then my first Alejandro Escovedo show is right after that! Thad Cockrell's and Caitlin Cary's CD release the same night with Alejandro is just some damn fine icing on that cake.

But then I think of Telluride... *sniff* HOLY CRAP I just looked at the artist list!!! I think I'm going blind! (Wilco!) (Emmylou!) (Old Crow!)

I hope you fine Colorado folks out there will drop me a line, and maybe send me some pictures? Have fun without me...

You gotta try to make it to Telluride one year, my friend. I've been once (helped that I tagged along with a friend who lives in Colorado ...) and it was unfriggin'believable. Not as good as Merlefest in that there's only one stage, so fewer options. But better in that they sell beer, and if you're not from around there you're a cheap drunk because you get sloshed on about two sips because of the elevation. Sweet! :)

I'm with you man, I have been DYING to go out there and see that. I like the fact that there is only one stage, I'm afraid I would go into music overload at Merlefest (actually I'm going next year come hell or high water to Merle). You actually can volunteer for Telluride, you give 4 four hour shifts and get a 4-day pass in exchange. I'm really considering it. They charge for camping, but all you have to do is go up the road, pull off to the side, and throw some sleeping bags out on the ground...Colorado is just one big campsite.
