Americana Sci-Fi?

Posted by Larry Karnowski at June 16, 2005 7:53 PM

I just started watching the DVDs of the sci-fi television series Firefly by Joss Whedon, the guy who did Buffy and Angel. Now, I knew that Joss had some good taste in music when he had Stranger's Almanac posters all over Buffy's high school the second or third season... but this...

The theme song of Firefly, which is a kind of a sci-fi western mix -- spaceships and cowboys, is chock-full of fiddles, acoustic guitar, and even banjo. It's a very Americana song -- no doubt. Wow...

(I'm always behind on TV... I just don't watch it. So if this theme song wasn't news to y'all... well then why the hell didn't you tell me?)

Anyway, the Sci-Fi channel is picking up Firefly for Friday nights -- it's been in all the geek news sites lately. You might want to check out the theme song.

This reminds me -- is Deadwood out on DVD? I feel that I should watch any show where Lost Highway Records did the soundtrack... especially with Lyle Lovett on it. And nowadays I don't watch TV unless it's on DVD.

I'm not saying it's the best song in the world... I'm just saying it's odd there's a sci-fi show with an Americana theme.

Melinda has been watching this since the Pilot. Was upset when it was cancelled. Bought the DVDs when they came out and is dragging me to the Movie when it comes out.

Of the episodes that I have seen, Janestown is the best.
