Best of 2004, #17: Hex by Neko Case

Posted by Larry Karnowski at June 30, 2005 11:00 AM

The first of -- well, I won't say how many -- songs in the 2004 Top 30 by Neko Case from her live The Tigers Have Spoken album, Hex is a Neko original about a curse a thwarted woman puts on her lover. This song is sensual, spooky, sexy, and a bit dangerous -- classic Neko style. No one else can write a song like this as well as Miss Case. It sends chills down your spine while at the same time turning you on... Add the fact this is actually a live recording captured from a concert.... damn. The vocals alone are amazing, but the backing band -- the Sadies -- give it just the perfect "midnight in October" soundscape.

All, I'm saying is... if this song is #17... you know there's some damn good stuff ahead, especially from Neko. Stay tuned.

I wish I had gotten "The Tigers Have Spoken" when it was released. Because it really needs to be on my Top 10 CDs of 2005 list. Maybe I'll call it Top 10 CDs I Listened to This Year instead, so I can cheat. I could listen to this CD twice a day every day.

Hope you include
Guided by the Wire.

I wish I could get a non-live version of this song. I love this version, but I can imagine how amazing the vocals would sound in a nicely produced studio version.
