Best of 2004, #16: Wishbones by Slaid Cleaves

Posted by Larry Karnowski at July 1, 2005 11:00 AM

"Spin the bottlecap, throw a shot back, everything's gonna be alright..."

Wow! All I can say is this is the only song I've ever heard from Slaid Cleaves, although I've obviously heard lots about the Austin-based singer/songwriter. With this one song I'm being slapped about the head and neck. It's saying -- "Listen to Slaid!" *slap* "Listen to Slaid!" *slap*

I must do what the songs tell me.

This is a great, rocky, Americana song, with themes of home and love and being away from home and growing up and losing out but sticking with it -- an Americana classic if ever there was one.

I know I've bragged on this before, but I have to agaain. Austin claims him now, but he's one of my homies from Maine. The Pine Tree State has more talent where that came from, too.

Fine choice.
Love this track, also "One Good Year
and
"Bring It On"

His previous album, "Broke Down," has some damn catchy songs, too, as Simon already pointed out. My favorites are the title track and "Lydia" and a nice cover of Del McCoury's "I Feel the Blues Moving In."
