Do touch that dial

In case you were wondering: Yes, radio in Japan IS just as bad as it is in the States. At least I think so. I haven't yet figured out the nuances of j-pop or found an underground Japanese bluegrass scene, if there is one, so I can't really comment on the music. And I don't even understand the language, so I can't comment exactly on what the station's themes are either. But whatever they're saying, the DJs here talk a lot, sometimes over a song's beginning and/or end. And they have annoying voices. And they are annoyingly chipper in the morning. And they use irritating sound effects all the time. And there are 47 ads between every two songs. And there are stupid contests. And call-in pranks (I think). And the same 12 songs get played over and over again. And ... Avril Lavigne is one of them.

Sigh.

Some things are the same everywhere.

Maybe one day I'll find here the equivalent of public radio, where good music of many genres can still be found, where you're actually interested in what the DJs say -- because it's about the music.

Until then, let's hope my iTrip holds up.

God bless the iTrip! Huzzah!

East Tennessee's own WDVX has come a long way from where it used to be. When it first started broadcasting there was no talking, only music, often with a lot of dead air space in between. There is a lot less dead air now, but there is also quite a bit more talking. Still nowhere near a commercial station, but I feel it is beginning to go that way. Enjoy it while it lasts, at least they are playing the correct mix.
