Walk the Line Movie Trailer
Posted by Larry Karnowski at July 26, 2005 8:00 AM
They've released the movie trailer to the new Johnny Cash biography movie! Go check it out!
First off -- I'm crazy excited about this movie! Although I was a uncertain at first, I've decided I love the casting. I think that Joaquin Phoenix looks startingly like a young Johnny Cash, and I love Reese Witherspoon with dark hair. (C'mon gal, make that your normal look!) She also looks a lot like a young June Carter, who I always thought was beautiful. (On a side note... how the hell do you pronounce "Joaquin?")
However -- after viewing this trailer, I'm a little worried. I think the story will be great and the actors will be great, but I'm worried about the quality of the film. From what I could see from the trailer it looks like it was filmed like a TV mini-series -- not like the edgy, gritty, realistic movie I was hoping for -- cutting as sharp as Johnny's gravelly voice. Instead, this looks polished, soft, television-dramatic, and I don't like it. Here's hoping I'm wrong.
Two of my favorite movies are The Buddy Holly Story and Coal Miner's Daughter, but I got into them late. I was born too late to see them when they were first released. Instead they were Saturday afternoon cable movie channel fare. I think this Johnny movie will be along the same lines as those movies (although I hope with a more modern cut to it, see above), and I'm looking forward to seeing a great first-run music star biography movie. I'm especially looking forward to this since I'm such a freaking huge Johnny Cash fan! Bring on the Man in Black!
Just don't screw it up. Make it edgy, show his dark side and his compassion, his drug-induced frenzies and his Bible-inspired faith. Show his walk on the wild side, show him stepping across that line, and then -- you guessed it -- show him walking the line.
(And by the way... I freaking LOVE this poster art. I'm going to have to track one of these down and hang it on my wall. There's absolutely no doubt about that! I wonder who the artist was? I'll have to track that down...)
I am super excited about this movie also and was surprised to learn that Joaquin learned to play the guitar and does all the singing in the movie (pronounced Wa-Keen) :)
Posted by: sarah at July 26, 2005 11:16 AMI LOVE me some Joaquin!! And love Reese... like you, I was skeptical @ first... but I think it looks like it will be good... (as stated on MY blog today as well) :)
Posted by: Saundra at July 26, 2005 9:44 PMOh man! When's the release date, do you know? Must be soon if you're seeing trailers. Of course, I have very little hope that it'll play in the base theater, but maybe I can see it in some Tokyo theater. Which will be weird as shit, especially if they dub it, but cool.
LOVE that poster! If you do find out who it's by, please tell so I can buy one and put that sucker on my wall.

And if you don't know how to pronounce "Joaquin", this proves that you paid absolutely no attention to any major league baseball broadcasts while growing up.

Posted by: larry at July 27, 2005 6:01 PMOuch, okay, that was one of the scariest web purchasing experiences I've had since 1998. I'd wait till it showed up on AllPosters.com if I were you, but thanks for the link Justin!
Posted by: larry at July 27, 2005 6:12 PMI'll never forget the way the First Nations people out here treated Johnny. He was like a patron saint to them. When he played on the Res, people would line the front of the stage with gifts - blankets, clothing, food, you name it.
I opened for his daughter once, but we never spoke. She and her hubby seemed kind of Big Town to me, but maybe I'm just insecure. Lovely voice, very happy she recovered that!
Posted by: Jim Pipkin at July 28, 2005 7:56 PMActually there is debate on if it is pronounce wa-keen or wo-keen, both have been said many times, but I'm pretty sure (yep pretty sure lol) that it is wo-keen. And yes, I'm with Saundra, love me some Joaquin. He picks good scripts with odd characters and plays them well. Hoping this movie is just as good.
Posted by: Cassidy at August 2, 2005 7:48 PMI can't be sure however the artwork on the poster seems rather like the work of emek - who is a rock poster artist... the style is very very similar. www.emek.net
Posted by: Chloe at August 19, 2005 7:03 AMThank you so much for telling us how to pronounce Joaquin (wa-keen). I was going nuts trying to figure it out. I thought it was like
Joe-quinn. But when they say his name in the Johnny Cash movie I was so confused and couldn't understand what the heck they said. Clears it up for me now.
