Giving Up On Postcard From Hell

Posted by Larry Karnowski at July 30, 2005 7:00 AM

So, I've decided to bail on the Postcard From Hell mailing list. I thought that Guitartown was a high volume mailing list! Sheesh! It's nothing compared to Postcard. I've got my mail setup to automatically put all email from that list into a single folder. I can look away for a couple of days, look back, and see there's 1,400 or more messages there! There's no way I could even hope to keep up with 1,400 messages in two days!

So I'm bailing. I just don't understand mailing lists when they get that chatty. How the hell does any normal person cope with it? I'm sure most of the readers aren't reading every note, but still... want a drink from a fire hydrant anyone?

For lists like that, Gmail is your friend.

The fact that Gmail will collapse those messages into a scant few "threads" gives you the ability to analyze a thread based on the subject line or an early post and decide whether you want to read it or not.

As is the case with Guitartown, the first post or three in a given thread is usually relevant. After that, it's chap (chap - n., contraction of "chat" and "crap").
