Best of 2004, #15: Restless by Alison Krauss & Union Station

Yep, I'm back... I promise to have my personal 2004 list done before we do the "official" group HickoryWind.org lists of 2005. Even if it kills me. (But I'm not too worried... you'd be amazed how non-lethal Best of Year lists really are.)

So anyway, my girl, my gal, the love of my life, and as Stacy would say -- my secret (even to her) wife, Alison Krauss has the #15 spot for 2004. The first single track from her Lonely Runs Both Ways album is Restless.

I remember thinking I didn't like this album at first. Pure insane drivel on my part. I was just still awarm with the glow of their magnificent live double album, and anything would pale to that. This is a great album. It just took me a little time to figure that out.

I love this song because it imparts a very specific feeling, but one I've felt often. It reminds me of my absolute favorite Alison song, Forget About It, in that regard. This feeling is that subtle start of loneliness late at night, when you're far away from your loved one, either physically, or more often -- emotionally. It builds inside you as "restlessness," until you just can't get to sleep at all. You can't do anything. It's rather an OCD sort of love-song, but I gotta be me.

Moreover, this seems to have that "call me already" sort of obsessiveness, err... "restlessness." I've definitely been there. You're in a relationship, something comes up, you've made your move, you know it's time to let her figure her own thing out, but you're just pacing the floor, or driving around aimlessly, or rolling around in bed, waiting for her to reach back out.

No, it's not Forget About It, by any long stretch, but damn if it's not a great song. I love you Alison!
