AMA Awards 2005

Posted by Larry Karnowski at September 13, 2005 7:00 AM

So the results are in, and the folks here at HickoryWind.org didn't pick so well, according to the Americana Music Association judges at their Fourth Annual awards ceremony. Oh well, these were all good picks, even if our chosen didn't get well....
chosen.

Here are the results:
* Artist of the Year: John Prine
* Album of the Year: Buddy Miller's Universal House of Prayer (yay Buddy!)
* Song of the Year: "Worry Too Much" by Mark Heard as recorded by Buddy Miller
* Best New/Emerging Artist: Mary Gauthier
* Instrumentalist of the Year: Sonny Landreth

There were also some Lifetime Achievement type awards too:
* Performer: Marty Stuart
* Songwriter: Guy Clark
* Executive: Rounder Records founders Ken Irvin, Marian Leighton and Bill Nowlin
* First Amendment Center/AMA "Spirit of Americana" Free Speech Award: Judy Collins
* President's Award: My boy John Hartford (God rest your soul!)

It looks like everyone and their brother showed up except yours truly, dammit. (Oh well, maybe next year.) There are some good pics in there! There are even some photos of the Avett Brothers, Thad & Caitlin, and the newlyweds Steve Earle and Allison Moorer.

Be sure to check out the televised airing of the awards ceremony on the cable channel Great American Country on Monday, September 26th at 8pm and 11pm EDT.

As is usual, I update my shopping list after a big award ceremony like this. My number one planned purchase has gotta be that Buddy Miller album. I've seen Buddy live twice, and I've been electrified both times. Once Julie was with him, and I just love listening to them together. I'm also gonna grab that Hayes Carll album, and should I get that Mary Gauthier album? I keep hearing mixed reviews. Hmm... better safe than sorry!

Anyway folks, I'm already looking forward to seeing another year of new albums and artists! Let's hope the awards next year are bigger and better than ever as they celebrate their fifth annual get-together.

The 2005 AMA conference was incredible - huge congrats to Jeff Green, Danna Strong, and the whole AMA team. The awards show in the Ryman this year was my first, and the response from everyone around me was "WOW what a difference from last year!"

My cousin Willie showcased with the South Austin Jug Band on Thursday, Sep 8, and pardon me for saying they did a GREAT job.Their new CD "Dark and Weary World" on Blue Corn is another one to add to the "I should have this" list. At their showcase I was particularly fond of the tune "Don't Call Me Coon-Ass".

There were even a couple of jam sessions in the Nashville Convention Center, nice to see that, as on the whole the jam situation was pauce. Realize it ain't a music festival, but still there were an awful lot of talented folks just looking for a pickin' parlor.

Can't wait til next year!

Amazing that between the three of us we still couldn't come up with all the winners. Maybe next year.

I'm putting this on my calender for next year. We must have a HickoryWind.org presence there I think.
