New releases: Oct. 18, 2005

Well, another short list this week. What's up, people? Everyone laying low to make way for the triumphant return of Ashlee Simpson? Sheesh!

Now that it's, um, kind of almost close to Halloween, the Christmas CDs are flowing in. Dang, people! I haven't even put away my T-shirts yet! Can we at least wait 'til it gets cold (pipe down, Coloradoans) at least? Most promising in the bunch is probably the Brian Setzer Orchestra's "Dig That Crazy Christmas." Add that to the Reverend Horton Heat release a couple weeks ago and it looks as though ol' Santa Claus is feeling rather rockabilly this year. Gretsches for all the good little boys and girls! Yay!!! Also notable is "Christmas Kind of Town" from Marah and "Skaggs Family Christmas" from Ricky and friends.

All right, this list is just too damn thin for me to come up with anything else. Just as well, too. I'm just a few hours away from starting a long-weekend vacation to Hakone! Plans include spending time bathing naked with strangers, as one does at an onsen, and eating some sort of magical hard-boiled eggs with black shells that are supposed to add seven years to your life for each one you eat. I'll try to get several down, as I'll need all the time I can get to learn to fully appreciate Wilco. :)

I've never been to Hakone before, so I'll have to make up the music playlist as I go, but I do have a starting point! The honor goes to Audioslave for the song "Doesn't Remind Me." It starts out with the line "I walk the streets of Japan till I get lost/Cause it doesn't remind me of anything ..." Seems apt. We'll see what happens from there.

Meanwhile, here are the new releases I could dig up for Tuesday, Oct. 18:
North Mississippi All-Stars -- Best of the North Mississippi All-Stars (Artemis)
Marah -- If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry and Christmas Kind of Town (Yep Roc)
Brian Setzer Orchestra -- Dig That Crazy Christmas (Surfdog/Wea)
Various artists (but pretty much Ricky Skaggs and the Whites) -- Skaggs Family Christmas (Skaggs Family)

Interesting that there was no mention of the somewhat Americana'ish Elizabethtown soundtrack that was released a few weeks back.

Maybe because the movie sucked so bad that it drew the soundtrack into a Black Hole?

DOES that movie suck??? I have heard tons of hype, but really I don't know anything about it. I'll have to wait 'til it comes out on DVD to check it out.

Yeah, sorry I didn't list the soundtrack. I did see a release date for it beforehand, and I wrote myself a note to include it in the list for that week (Sept. 13), and ... oh look! ... that note's still on my desk. Heh. I guess it just kind of blended into the background, which happens easily when your desk is as cluttered as mine. But yes! "Elizabethtown" soundtrack! Sept. 13! Get it while it's hot! Aw man.

The tunes are great, but IMHO the acting is kinda lame, and whoever wrote it NEVER EVER lived in a real small town. Maybe drove through once doing 70.

Was that Coloradoans comment directed at me? Cause you just know I'm gonna bust on your definition of "cold." :)

Karen, knowing Stacy... I'm guessing that yes, that was directly aimed at you.

No no, not just Karen! Just acknowledging that I was aware it was snowing in Colorado as I wrote that post. But everywhere else, still balmy. As the good lord intended. :)
