John Mayer Trio Review

Posted by Larry Karnowski at October 24, 2005 10:47 PM

Hey, so my buddy Waylon finally got out to that John Mayer Trio show in Atlanta a few weeks ago, and he posted a short review of it on his site. He said it was almost all Blues, and he enjoyed it a lot. Glad to hear ol' John's really is as talented as we all know he could be.

So help me with this John Mayer thing. Because I was kind of OK with him until "Your Body's a Wonderland," a song that made me cringe so much that I decided I must live in a bubble if that's what it'll take for me to never hear John Mayer again. But now here are people whose opinion I respect saying he *doesn't* suck? That he's actually good? Really? So is this a guy whose "real" stuff is miles away from his radio stuff, then? 'Splain, please. I want to understand.

From what I've heard from Waylon, Sean, and James, yes, that's pretty much it. It all began when they saw him on Austin City Limits I think.

YES! I was in Stacy's camp on John Mayer until I came across his ACL performance w/ Buddy Guy & Double Trouble. I was completely floored by his blues chops.

I believe the ACL site actually has some video clips from the show.

Interesting! I'll check it out.

Wow, I'm famous now...mentioned on Hickory Wind!!! Glad you've been following the blog Larry. Yes Stacy, I like you, made fun of one of my friends (I won't go into detail, but I was brutal) when he said he liked John Mayer. Knowing I am a huge Blues fan, he politely told me to sit down and shut up. He then threw in a "bonus" disc that had come with one of Mayer's albums that was a live recording of him, from several years ago here in ol' Atlanta, that was Mayer playing "Wind Cries Mary" followed by SRV's version of "Lenny". It was unbelievable. He will have an album coming out November 22 that is a compilation of his live performances from this year. True blues enthusiasts hear this: JM is still a little green and afraid of turning completely from pop, but there are moments when he forgets that he is a pop icon and it is magical.
