An Antipodean's Wish List
Posted by Amanda Rose at November 8, 2005 5:00 PMInspired by sean's post below. I did a little list of my top 5 6 must see gigs. I've excluded deceased artists I never got to see, top of that list eternally of course is Johnny Cash. The most recent crossed off was Kris Kristofferson. Of course being on the wrong side of the world lowers my odds alot.
Leonard Cohen I swing pessimistic and optimistic about the chances of seeing him. I was most encouraged by the recent news he was ripped off by his manager, nothing like being completely broke to force you back out on the road.
Bruce Springsteen Was overseas when he toured Oz last year -- in Russia where you couldn't turn around for tours by 70s prog rockers or remaining Beatles but no one decent. I watch the Live in NYC and Barcelona DVDs alot, even through my two inch speakers --- electric. Damn it, I wanna worship at the altar of rock and roll.
Guy Clark Hello? If you don't know why ....
Tom Russell Complete maverick, hypnotic voice and with added bonus of brilliant sideman Andrew Hardin.
Bob Dylan OK, I've seen him 8 times already but it's different every time so it's like I've never seen him before. Think about it.
Randy Newman Unique, hilarious, perfect. I often encounter doubt about this in people who only know Short People or I Love L.A. I have a standing offer of a personally compiled Best Of Randy CD to anyone yet to be convinced. Total conversion or your money back! Email me now!
Rounding out the ten for today:
John Hiatt
Ralph Stanley
Doc Watson
Lucinda Williams
Amanda, we gotta get you to Merlefest girl. This year alone:
* Doc Watson, check
* Ralph Stanley, check
* Guy Clark, check
The phrase that comes to mind is something akin to... "na na na boo boo." Very similar to that, actually.

Posted by: Sharon at November 9, 2005 10:20 AMCaught the Cohen a few times, but the best was so long ago I don't want to recall the date - and he had something like a 14-piece support band, including three quitarists, which just ripped. One of the most wonderful of concerts ever in my book. Made me go the next two times he was out, but he was by himself - still good of course, but that first gig - wow!
Posted by: cs at November 11, 2005 12:50 AMerr, did I type 'guitarists'?
Posted by: cs at November 11, 2005 12:51 AMAh man, I finally looked up "antipodean." Great word!
