Manifesto 2

Posted by Amanda Rose at November 8, 2005 5:00 PM

Proposition A. People who describe themselves as "admirers" of music should be ignored and ridiculed.
Proposition A(i). Music should be lived, hated, loved, loathed, rejected outright or embraced wholly. Anything but admired.

Suspicious behaviour.Claims to like music but: CD collection over 50% Greatest Hits. Thinks "fairness" and "balance" has any place in thinking/feeling about music. Talks at gigs. Will own the O Brother soundtrack but still sneer at country music. Thinks seeing more than one show on a particular tour is "going overboard." Happy to sit up the back of concerts. Happy to sit at concerts. Complains it didn't sound like the record. Still reads Rolling Stone. Listens to the radio for the music. Thinks endless arguments about steel guitarist X from June 1958 versus steel guitarist Y from April 1960 are pointless. Uses the phrase "nostalgia trip!" or similar about listening to music recorded pre-last year. Buys anything specifically put out "in time for Christmas." Uses "before my/your time" in same way. Thinks "dangerously obsessive" is a bad thing.

Response. Death by stoning.

Comments

Had some staffers from a small label I once worked with show up at a tiny little gig - room was about 20X30. They spent the whole show with their backs to me, talking politics.

I would have stoned them, but they were stoned already.

Yes, you had me at "talking at gigs." Why would anyone pay $25 to go to a show and yap at their friends??? Go to friggin' Starbucks instead for free! OK. Breathing. Can't say more or I'll rant all day.

I'm with you on most of this but i will say that sometimes I like to sit down by the soundboard at gigs so i can really get the best listening situation possible. For example this week i'm seeing the Old 97's four times. i figure the 2nd or 3rd show i will take it easy and listen to what those cats are playing. So I guess I support some suspicious behavior.
