Thanksgiving 2005
Posted by Larry Karnowski at November 23, 2005 7:00 AMAll, so this is the post where I
1) tell you we're taking the rest of the weekend off to enjoy Thanksgiving with our family and friends, and
2) yes... I'm going to tell you a few things I'm thankful for. Just deal with the hokiness.
I'm first off thankful that I've gotten off of work tomorrow to drive home to see my family. Although I'm not thankful there's a bunch of snow in the mountains right now, and I'm hoping everything there works out for me. Anyway...
I'm thankful that although my Dad is stuck in the desert out in Kuwait for the Holidays, at least he has email and can call us and we can wish him a good time. Y'all should leave a little Holiday love for the Frank-ster here, by the way, I know he'll appreciate it.
I'm thankful that we've got such killer tickets to Merlefest next year, and that it's going to so royally kick ass. I'm not thankful, however, that I'm most likely gonna be the only HickoryWinder there. (boohoo)
I'm thankful that Johnny Cash is so very cool again, and that his 16 Greatest Hits album has become a best-seller on iTunes. I'm sure it's selling well all over the place actually. Keep buying those records, kids!
I'm thankful for my buddies who write on this silly site with me -- Stacy, Sean, and Amanda. Thanks for putting up with it all, sticking in there, and keeping at it. I love y'all so freakin' much.
Thanks to all our loyal friends and commenters -- Jim, James, Shaneo, Frank, Waylon, Sharon, Karen, Boney, the Drunkard, countrygrrl, etc, etc, and all those folks I've failed to mention. Y'all rock my world. Keep on keepin' on.
And lastly, I'm pretty damn thankful to live in my country, as mixed up as it can be sometimes, during this time, as strange and wonderful as it can be, and to be who I am when I am and with whom I am. I tell you what... I feel pretty damn blessed most of the time. Thanks to God, who makes it all possible, and who I fail on a regular basis to credit as much as He deserves. (Watch out for my Dad, will you, Big Guy?)
Thanks all! We'll see you next Monday!
Well said, Larry. Let me be the first to wish Daddy Frank (The Guitar Man, as Hag would say) a safe and happy holiday.

It has been a tradition in my family -- maybe in many families -- to go around the Thanksgiving table and ask everybody: What are you thankful for?
One Thanksgiving when my children were very young, we began with me. I was thankful for my family, for being together, for the time we had, and other patriarchal oratory. My wife was thankful for similar things. My daughter, maybe 8 at the time, added her lengthy list of friends and possessions.
Then we came to Matt, only 4. He was still thinking, but soon it dawned on him, this thing he was most thankful for in his so-far short life.
"Handles," he said.
I gotta hand it to him: It never occurred to me to be thankful for handles, even though I am regularly thankful for handles. And knobs, rails, hinges, shelves, screw caps, cup-holders, envelopes, sandwich bags, can openers, lids, screwdrivers, soap dishes, buttons, rubber bands, remote controls, cardboard boxes, paper clips ... all kinds of stuff I typically don't take time to appreciate. But I guarantee there's usually a string of choice words when they're missing!
So ... don't forget to be thankful for the little things.
And have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Posted by: Ron Franscell at November 23, 2005 8:31 AMRon, can we *not* be thankful for love-handles, though?
Thanks Ron! Have a happy Holiday!
Posted by: larry at November 23, 2005 8:53 AMLarry, hope you have a great time in Murvull with your family. I'm thankful that you started this site, that I have reconnected with an old high school chum, and that I am exposed on a daily basis to kick ass music that I would have otherwise missed out on. Sean, Amanda, and Stacy...you guys rock!
Posted by: Waylon at November 23, 2005 10:50 AMI am so thankful that Ashlee Simpson was not skulking around the Country Music Awards this year. God knows everyone else was.
Frank, we've never met, but be careful over there and come home safe.
Larry, just found out that David Bromberg will be taking some time away from his violin shop and playing at Merlefest - sounds like it will be a real hoot, wish I was going. And don't worry about having friends there - my impression is that you will be among 90,000 friends that you haven't met yet.
Happy Thanksgiving all!
Posted by: Jim Pipkin at November 23, 2005 11:02 AMLarry, I'm just glad you're coming home. I don't get to see you enough. Love you! Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Hug as many people as possible!
Posted by: Cassidy at November 23, 2005 4:41 PMMy best wishes to everyone.
My brother-in-law is American so on Sat I'll be over at his and my sister's place here in Sydney for their annual get together. I'm only staying for a bit though (long enough to scarfe my body weight in turkey, cornbread and candied yams - heh, "candied yams", always makes me laugh for some reason) because I've got another Steve Earle gig that night. A very American day all round!
I'll be thinking of you all.
Posted by: Amanda at November 23, 2005 4:48 PMwell said. i posted some Cash yesterday on the blog -- keeping that love alive!!
Posted by: Satisfied '75 at November 23, 2005 6:17 PMI'm thankful for this site, and its amazing growth from being just a seed of an idea in Larry's noggin at Merlefest, and for Larry's vision and drive in general. Thankful too for fellow drones Amanda and Sean, and most of all to the readers and commenters, without whom this site would be, you know, a tree falling in a forest when everyone's at the Iron Bowl.
Thankful too for the musicians who rock our world (and even for the ones who suck because those usually make for the most wickedly funny posts) and who do what they do for the love of it, with little hope of ever getting rich and famous off it.
And last but not least, thankful for dudes (and dudettes!) like Frank. Hope you're getting a break from the MREs today, buddy. Here's to you coming home safe and sound and soon.
