New releases: Dec. 13, 2005

Another short list this week, but you'll be too busy Christmas shopping next week to have much time to listen to anything other than piped-in mall Christmas music, am I right? Don't worry, it happens in Japan, too. But here sometimes they translate the songs into Japanese, so you hear "Frosty the Snowman" but can't understand any lyrics except a heavily accented "Frosty the snowman ..." leading into a whole lot of very fast singing in Japanese. At least, that's what you hear if you're me. If you have a brain smart enough to have actually learned Japanese, you probably appreciate it on a much different level.

Anyway. Yes. New releases this week, coming Tuesday:
Beck -- Guerolito (Interscope)
An album of remixes from "Guero" with guests like Ad Rock from The Beastie Boys and a dude from the Dust Brothers. Normally I roll my eyes at these things, but this one might be worth checking out on the outside chance the extreme awesomeness of "Guero" is actually improved upon. Could happen ... but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Howie Day -- Live From ... [EP] (Sony)
Includes a live version of "Collide," and a track called "Don't Dream it's Over," which I can only assume is a cover of the Crowded House classic. Sweet. Less sweet is the fact that it's from Sony, and it's apparently got "content/copy protection," which probably means it will eat a hole in your computer's innards and send your bank account number to Osama bin Laden. Buyer beware. Downloader, you should be safe. Good job, Sony. Smart move.

NO! We are mad at Beck! We say, "Screw you, Beck. We're tired of getting burned by our favorite artists constantly putting out slightly new stuff!" OK, maybe it isn't the same as reissuing the old album with one or two new songs, but it's still a little shitty.

No way, dude! These are total remixes! Like replacing some of the grooves entirely and drastically changing tempos, that kind of thing. Also, Beck is too adorable to be mad at. Fact.

That said, I'm not sure I'll be _buying_ this CD, as I'm not that big a fan of club music or mash-ups or, well, remixing, really. Probably will check it out on iTunes or something. Seems like a remix album would be a good thing to put out online, or sell at shows, instead of with a traditional CD release, but hey, if you're into the remixes, it's probably worth the $16.
