Your Daughters And Your Sons

For those of you who didn't get out to a Duhks show last year to pick up their 2002 independent Canadian release, Your Daughters And Your Sons, it's being re-released in America by Sugar Hill Records on January 24th. I actually like this album better than their selft-titled release they were promoting last year. This first album features more instrumentals, is more traditional, with more Celtic and folk ties. The vocal tracks are still a little inconsistent, but their rendition of Gillian Welch's Rock of Ages is definitely worth a listen.

Anyway, if you liked their album from last year, and wanted to hear more instrumentals, I recommend picking up this first album. Where did I get it? They were selling them at the Merlefest CD tent last year! I just keep finding reasons to go to Merlefest.

Wow, going back and listening to this CD again, I'd forgotten how much I liked it. The only song I don't really like is the title track. The rest, even the vocal tracks, are pretty damn good.

It definitely was sweet being able to pick up this disc at Merlefest. Sharon and I will miss it this year, but we'll be gearing up for the 20th in 2007.

This group really impresses me - I'm just tickled pink to see young artists building their own instruments, and blending genres so well. They took the Folk Alliance by storm. These people were everywhere. Took the train over to a little curry place in Montreal to get away from the FA one afternoon - and there they were at the next table.

Without a doubt, after relistening to their two albums today, it's more and more apparent to me that the reason I really like this band is this first album. If I'd only had heard the second album, especially without seeing them live, I wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much as I do.

If you were one of those "these guys are... um, alright, they've got something, but it just doesn't really speak to me" people, maybe you should give this first album a listen. It's less boogie, more traditional, but still up-tempo, bright, and catchy.
