Podcast, Volume #1: Patty Hurst Shifter & The Avett Brothers
Posted by Larry Karnowski at January 26, 2006 11:00 PMOh man, oh man... here it is... we've been keeping this secret for a while, but James finally cowboyed up and got us a podcast together! Hell yeah! It's me and James, drinking beer, playing music, and shooting the shit like we normally do... I hope y'all enjoy!
We play a few songs from a couple of local North Carolina bands -- the just-released Patty Hurst Shifter album Too Crowded on The Losing End, and a few pre-releases from the fabulous new Avett Brothers album coming out on February 7th, Four Thieves Gone, The Robbinsville Sessions.
Take a listen!
OH! And I guess I should give James a big welcome, although he's been here from the beginning. One of our most constant commenters, and one my bestest buds, James has been nagging me to get this Podcast up and running. Without him and his mad recording skillz, this Podcast wouldn't have happened at all. So sit back, take a listen, and please make James feel welcome!
Oh, and let us know what you think! We're crazy excited about it!
(And yes... the RSS feed is coming soon so it'll be a "REAL" podcast... baby steps m'dears... baby steps.)
Posted by: larry at January 27, 2006 12:08 AMTwo things (and I already mentioned one to you, but hey, might as well have it down for posterity :-)
1. It's not a podcast unless it has an rss feed.
2. If you were using Wordpress, it would take care of that for you automatically. :-P
Anyway, 1/4th of the way through. Sounds pretty good. You guys need to slow town your talking, but otherwise, very cool!
BTW, do you take requests for future shows? ;-)
Posted by: Tanner Lovelace at January 27, 2006 12:10 AMAbout half way through right now. I'm enjoying the music and the commentary. Definitely giving me some CDs to check out. For some reason I can hear you, Larry, much better than James. Were you closer to the mic?
You need some album art and go for the whole enhanced podcast deal where you can show the albums you are playing and click to go to their websites.
Great job guys, looking forward to the rss so I can subscribe :)
Posted by: Bill at January 27, 2006 8:32 AMHe's using movable type, which also has the ability to do podcast stuff if he'd just install the plugin.
Or, just use FeedBurner, which can automatically add enclosure tags for any media in your RSS feed for you! :)
Posted by: Ranger Rick at January 27, 2006 9:47 AMRanger Rick, oh cool, I new he was using MT but didn't know it could do that too.
Larry, btw, you did make sure to get all the necessary permissions, licenses, etc... to podcast music, right? I certainly hope so because I'd hate to see your podcast go down before it even gets off the ground.
Posted by: Tanner Lovelace at January 27, 2006 11:05 AMOkay, technical/legal issues:
* I'm out of town this weekend, but as soon as I get back, I'll get a MovableType RSS podcast feed up and running.
* WordPad is out of the question for now. It doesn't support multiple authors like I want, and besides I like MovableType.
* We are playing songs from albums we were given to review. We are sampling at a low, low, low bit-rate, and we tend to talk over the beginning and ending of the songs. (But not enough to be annoying, I hope.) If someone wanted to pirate these songs, I consider this is a poor, poor source of them. They'd have to be real low-lifes to do that anyway.
* We're working on the microphone issues. We used two mics, and they didn't seem to pick us up equally. (James' was kinda crappy.) We leveled the volume as well as we could afterwards in the mix, but I think now we could've done better. That's the goal for the next one! ONWARD and UPWARD! ;-)
As for the content though -- did you like the songs? Did you enjoy the Podcast? ;-)
Posted by: larry at January 28, 2006 11:55 AMCurse my computer-less state at the moment. I can't listen, but I'm crazy excited about it too!
Posted by: Amanda at January 29, 2006 6:30 PMLarry, when did you develop that slow southern drawl? You sound so different than I remember...this is so freaking cool.
Posted by: Waylon at January 30, 2006 11:42 AMTo paraphrase the late great Warren Zevon: "Patty Hearst heard the burst of Podcast Volume 1 and bought it".
Nice job. How about digging up a worthy obscurity to feature along with the new releases?
