Bonnaroo news

Posted by Stacy Chandler at February 1, 2006 8:22 PM

Moving right along with this idea of the difficulty of labeling music, the mid-June Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee has announced some of its lineup this year. Headliners include Radiohead (maybe one day I'll get them, just like now I suddenly get Wilco, but that's gonna be a tough one), Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Beck and Buddy Guy. The balance of all the artists announced so far leans away from the festival's jam-band roots and more toward indie rock, the organizers acknowledge. Other acts signed on so far are My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Bela Fleck, Ben Folds, Nickel Creek, Steve Earle, Jerry Douglas and Ms. Bettye LaVette. What do all these acts have in common? Not very much ... which sounds to me like a recipe for an excellent festival. Anyone going?

Buddy Miller? Classified as some type of Christian rock but really, whatever. Sometimes, as you point out, it's hard to classify Americana artists. Maybe unclassified fits? Nice post. I just started a blog featuring public radio artists that you might like, or not. Feel free to link back if you dig it. Thanks! http://chewingtheclef.blogspot.com/

Stacy, I actually got my Radiohead 101 and 201 lists together before I did the Wilco lists. I've just been waiting for my moment to pull 'em out. Maybe I can hook you up.

Radiohead are the new Beatles. I shit you not.

(And I think... although this deserves its own post... that Wilco are the new Rolling Stones...)

But Bonnaroo... man, maybe this is my year for Bonaroo. Radiohead and Beck? Sounds like my year.

Larry,

I have tremendous respect for your knowledge, and you may well be right, but here's my position at least until I've sifted through Radiohead 101 and 201: If Radiohead are the new Beatles, then I'm the new Ernest Hemingway.

You're right Sean, maybe Wilco isn' the new Rolling Stones, but the new R.E.M. Hmmm, but we're definitely in agreement that Radiohead are absolutely the new Beatles.

that Wilco are the new Rolling Stones..

Please don't go there Larry. You won't like me when I'm angry.

I'd just like to be a fly on the wall for a Beck/Earle/Radiohead backstage jam.

It would be, like, the new Grateful Dead...but with banjos and cuss words!

Bonnaroo fantasy: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings join Radiohead on "Blackstar."

Oh, nice fantasy, Boney! I'm digging her cover of "Black Star" a lot! (Available on her website and on the iTMS.)

I contest the argument that Radiohead are the new Beatles.

You can actually understand Lennon/McCartney lyrics. [Including "Happiness Is A Warm Gun".]
