Norah Does Country
Posted by Larry Karnowski at February 11, 2006 1:20 PMOkay, this article about Norah Jones and her band doing a country album under a different name, the "Little Willies," both excites me and pisses me off. First off -- I respect Norah and her crew as artists. I've seen them cover country songs in concert, and damn... it's good. I've never thought Norah hid her country influences anyway. I mean, hell, she covered a Hank Williams song on her first album, and had Dolly Parton co-write and sing a song on her second album. So, I've always thought of her as a cross-over artist, a true artist, able to sing whatever the hell she wants when she wants.
But this article exposes the record company's fear of a Country Norah. This quote really pisses me off -- "I heard one rumor that one of the heads of EMI was happy that Norah did this record because he was happy that she got her country kick out (now) so it wouldn't be on her next record." This is from one of the bandmembers and songwriters, Richard Julian. Oh no! She might cover a Hank Williams or Dolly Parton tune and ruin her next album!
This just shows me how out of touch with real music record executives are. Real music has multiple influences, many textures, and can ride back and forth between them all. I know Norah has a huge pop following, but it's for a good reason -- she's a real talent. This concern about a "country album" seems off-center. She's already been doing this, just let her do it.
An EMI exec says, "There might be people who bought her past two albums who don't dig this, who think she's a country artist now." Relax man! These are Townes Van Zandt and Kris Kristofferson songs, not Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Norah isn't going to wear a cowboy hat anytime soon. These are just going to be great old country songs done in her Jazzy-Twang style. Just relax. It won't ruin her career. I expect it might open her audience to a great wealth of old songs, and hopefully, inspire an entirely new genre of artists to experiment and follow her lead. Sheesh!
(She would look good in a cowboy hat, though, wouldn't she? No wait... nevermind.)
Eh, what can you say? It's popular music, it's business as usual.
And, given the anal retentive nature of most people and their personal preference of music (e.g., those who listen to nothing but indie rock, those who listen to nothing but Americana, those who listen to nothing but country, etc.) then I'm quite sure many Norah fans would feel and will feel alienated by an all country album. It's a lot like enjoying Cookies'n'Creme ice cream, but all of a sudden you find nothing but Cookies and no Creme in the ice cream. It's not the same.

Mostly covers, including Hank Williams, George Jones and Rodney Crowell. The old fellow is in great voice and these songs really suit his style. He obviously has a great love for these songs and its great to hear him back on form again. And he's wearing a cowboy hat on the cover.(OK not as photogenic as Norah Jones).
