A Little Led Zep And A Little Sabbath

Posted by Larry Karnowski at March 6, 2006 11:40 AM

My brother's turned me onto two EPs on the iTunes Music Store by an Australian band called Wolfmother. Man oh man... classic Led Zeppelin plus Black Sabbath with just a pinch of the White Stripes... dang. Of the two EPs, I'd recommend Dimension over the self-titled Wolfmother, but both are worth your money.

This just amazes me, because 1) they're so obviously derivative, but yet, 2) so nostalgic, and yet again 3) somehow edgy and fresh sounding. I can't get my head around it. But somehow it works. I like that as the music industry expands and produces more and more material, much more of this stuff can float to the surface. It's an obvious labor of love for 70s rock buffs but yet... like I said, it's crazy how up to date and relevant they've made this sound. It's really cooking my head.

(Whoa, I'm geting a little rush of Rush from The Earths Rotation Around The Sun. Wicked.)

Actually, I'm going to upgrade that to a STRONG recommendation of the "Dimensions" EP rather than the self-titled one. Damn "Dimensions" is good...

My sister knows the sister of the drummer in Wolfmother. Bow down before my awesomeness!

Amanda, whatever became of a quirky little rock band down there called "Cold Chisel"?

Well I guess they broke up about 15 years ago but have done some reunions and the the individual members are still out and about.

Khe Sahn is practically the Australian national anthem.

Great writing, they only toured briefly up here, but rocked the circuit when they did. "Cheap Wine and a Three Day Growth" nails it.
