New releases: March 28, 2006

Ug.

Why ug?

Two reasons.

One, I have a just-in breaking news report from a reliable source who lives in my home that a certain neighbor just came by, sat on our couch, picked his toes, apparently found something tasty there, and ate it. So now I can't ever go home because it's tainted by horribleness.

Two, though by contrast now a significantly lesser "ug," I have to do the taxes this weekend. Anyone got any suggestions for good music to fill out tax forms by? (Do NOT say the Beatles' "Tax Man." Do. Not.)

When I'm all angry and riled-up over how much I have to pay (and what I think most of that money is going toward) next week, maybe the new album from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs can help me rock (RAWKKK!) my pain away. If I can afford to buy the CD after writing the tax check, that is ...

New releases for Tuesday, March 28:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs -- Show Your Bones (Interscope)
OK, so the YYYs aren't even remotely Americana. But they ARE super-rockin', so they get not only to be on the this list but also to top it. So there.
Claire Lynch -- New Day (Rounder)
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's -- The Dust of Retreat (Artemis)
Don't know much about 'em, but they definitely get the award for best band name I've heardin a long time. They're labelmates of Steve Earle and the late Warren Zevon, so I think that qualifies them for a closer look, no?

You could always listen to the Stevie Ray Vaughan version of "Taxman." Or Pink Floyd's "Money." Or the Allman Brothers' "High Cost of Low Living." Or you could just put Gillian Welch's "Revival" on repeat and enjoy the goodness. Of course, It doesn't have anything to do with taxes (with the possible exception of "One More Dollar"). I'm only saying that because I'm listening to it right now.

Stacy, please don't spring this toe-eating-crap-thing on me so early in the morning anymore... please. Yikes.

Well, it was pretty late in the evening here when it happened, and that didn't make it any easier to take, believe me.

But yeah, I probably should have prefaced that with a warning of some kind. Heh.

See this link for a Canadian musical take on tax-time: "Knee In My Package" to the tune of 'Hand In My Pocket.' http://www.cbc.ca/mercerreport/
(Hand In My Pocket Spoof Ad under Top 5 videos this week)

Also - The Modern Sounds of the Knitters would be good tax form listening: especially 'The New Call of the Wreckin' Ball', 'Long Chain On', 'I'll Go Down Swinging.'

I usually watch a vampire movie during taxes - bloodsuckers.
As far as music, I'd have to go with
what I need after writing the ceck
Beer Run by Todd Snider,
Broken Whiskey Glass by Jason & Scorchers
Whiskey River by Willie (he may not appreaciate the IRS irony)
One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - John Lee Hooker's version

Did he eat the toe jam alone, or spread it on a sliver of toenail for more cruchy goodness?

You'll be introducing me to that fine gentleman when I come over there, yes?
It's gonna be "Fox Confessor Brings Flood" for me tomorrow, not because there's any clever lyrical significance, but because I just bought it today.
