Merlefest 2006: Thursday Evening
Posted by Larry Karnowski at April 27, 2006 8:27 PMThe Avetts have "gone Manson," the Dillards ruled, Doc rocked, Feufollet rolled in French, and Darrell Scott of course kicked ass. Jim Lauderdale is pickin' some mighty fine Bluegrass at the moment...
I didn't get to see the Avetts or Dillards as much as I wanted, since I was doing the backstage Jamcamper gig. What I heard of the Avetts was great though. The "going Manson" was a quote by Shaneo about their hillbilly beards. I think they're great myself. (Heh!) They're certainly causing a stir here. I'll be sure to check both out before the weekend ends.
Darrell Scott has created a very young band full of mostly new faces. He had one very familiar face though -- my boy Casey Driesen! They had Luc Bela step out to play fiddle with Casey on one kick-ass version of "River Take Me." That's already made it into my Merlefest 2006 "magic moments."
Damn, I wish Jim Lauderdale always did Bluegrass! I like him best that way, absolutely.
CDs to buy:
* Darrell Scott's new pre-release, "Invisible Man." Available only here at the moment.
* Jim Lauderdale's new CD, available only here.
