Best Celtic Album In A Decade

Normally when I get back from Merlefest, I'm in a super-Bluegrass mode. It usually lasts about half the summer, and around the second half of the summer I'm stretching out into more genres again. Usually. This year, though... it's different.

I got home to a Solas live CD/DVD from Compass Records. Instead of Bluegrass, I haven't stopped listening to Celtic music for a couple of weeks now. I just... can't... stop.

Let me catch you up on a little bit of history here. My brother and I have been fans, albeit rather uninformed fans, of Celtic music for a while now. Tony came across a mixed CD of this little band called Solas a while back which he shared with me. I've worn my mixed CD out, man, playing it over and over. But I really didn't know anything about this band.

For example, I kept pronouncing their name "SOE-loss". Let me tell you, if it's even vaguely Gaelic, it's not pronounced like you'd expect. This band name, which means "light" in Gaelic, is pronounced "SUH-less". That wasn't all I didn't know about them.

Basically, it boils down to this -- Solas has been the nucleus of all interesting and innovative Irish American Celtic music for the past ten years. I don't know how to be any more succinct than that.

Come to find out, all that good Irish music I've been hearing other places for a while now? It was all directly or indirectly related to Solas. Period. The "Brothers McMullen" soundtrack? (Minus the Sarah McLachlan song... just move along.) It was all Seamus Egan and the early version of Solas -- Winifred Horan on fiddle, John Doyle on rhythm guitar, and John Williams on accordian. (Plus a few others, who become Solas members or in their sphere of influence later.) All those great Irish songs on Tim O'Brien albums? Seamus, Karan Casey, John Doyle, John Williams, etc. All Solas folks. That amazing rhythm guitar player I saw play with Tim O'Brien at the Cat's Cradle a couple of years ago? John Doyle. Crazy.

If you want more proof of how crazy I am for this band, once I finally figured out what was what from this CD and DVD, I realized that my CD collection was seven CDs short. That mixed CD I got a year ago wasn't cutting it anymore, so last Wednesday I got a box from Amazon on my doorstep with all seven Solas CDs in it. I've been opening them and absorbing them one at a time.

Okay, enough gushing, let me tell you about the band. They're a traditional Irish band with some very new ideas about arrangement and they're not shy about adding new instruments to the mix. The core members have been Seamus Egan, who plays whistles, flutes, banjo, acoustic guitar, nylon string guitar, classical guitar, and electric guitar; and Winifred (Winnie) Horan, who is now definitely in my top five favorite fiddlers of all time. Beyond that they've had a few different rhythm guitar players, accordian players, other multi-instrumentalists, percussionists, and beautifully-voiced female singers. The two singers they've had are Karan Casey, who's famous in her own right on the Irish traditional scene, and Deidre Scanlon, who's famous now.

I'm no Celtic/Irish expert, but what I've gleaned is that most traditional tunes can be broken up into one of four types of music -- reels/slides, the various versions of jigs, "songs," and "airs". Reels, slides, and jigs are fast-tempo dance tunes of different time signatures and phrasing, songs are tunes with words, and airs are slow, sad instrumentals.

Solas play a great mix of mostly very fast dance tunes -- sets of reels and jigs, but an occasional high-octane fast-tempo song like "Nil Na La" or "Wind That Shakes the Barley." They break up the fast pace with a slow song or air here and there, and with Winnie Horan's amazing classical chops on her fiddle, they're always beautiful.

I really feel like this CD/DVD set is a perfect starter for someone wanting to get into the more hardcore traditional Celtic music because 1) this is the core band, hands-down, of the past decade, 2) this live CD shows them at their most accessible and exciting, 3) this live CD demonstrates all of their various line-ups and phases in a "reunion" concert, and 4) it's all documented for you from top to bottom on the DVD! I can't tell you how much this DVD has done to "connect the dots" in my head! It's really helped me put all these sporadic and disjointed pieces of Celtic information all together. Solas is really, absolutely one of my favorite all-time bands.

Whew... Okay, some songs? "Nil Na La" is probably the most recognizable and quintessential Solas song, and they wisely choose it for the last song of the concert, although it's not the last song on the CD. It's fast and furious, with Karan Casey's high voice matched with Deirde Scanlon's, both singing lines of Gaelic and English. This is absolutely one of the songs that changed my life. Listen to John Doyle's crazy rhythm guitar. He has such a distinctive coloring to his sound.

I had never heard them do "Pastures of Plenty" before, the old Woody Guthrie tune. I've only heard it done as a folk song or as Dan Tyminski's Bluegrass version on the last Alison Krauss and Union Station album. This version, however, is very unique. It's insanely high-tempo, brash, bold, and in your face. It completely retools the sound of this song... recreates it. Listen to the "Grand Cooley Damn" line... gives me chills. Also pay note to the rhythm guitar slams John Doyle throws in after the "work till I die" line. Dang.

Want some Americana songs? Listen to Deirdre Scanlan sing "Silver Dagger," Mick McAuley sing "Rain and Snow" (probably the best version of that song I've ever heard, beating out the Be Good Tanyas and Del McCoury), or Eamon McElholm sing "Lowground." That last song especially will give you an Americana vibe. It sounds almost like a Texas tune.

Watching the DVD performance of "The Big Reels" will show you that even super-groups play their own tunes too fast sometimes. It seems no matter how good you are, if you're excited and nervous, you rush. However, being brilliant instrumentalists does give you something -- if you rush, it just sounds crazy delicious.

The only thing I can say negative about this album is fairly weak. Although I enjoy them a lot, the songs by backup singer and songwriter Antje Duvekot (don't ask me to pronounce it) are a little... hmmm, "Loreena McKennitt-ish" for me. I like them, but they're definitely more contemporary than most of the material. "Black Annis" is a romanticized song about being taken captive by a woman who in the actual story was a terrifying hag -- a monster taking the form of a woman who eats people, especially babies. This Annis is much more Morgan Le Fey than hag, though, and the song is more cerebral and Gothic. I'm not sure at all what the other song, "Reasonland" is about. Beautiful melodies, but just a little out there for me to be completely comfortable recommending them.

Well, all I can say is this -- I didn't think it was possible, as I didn't think anything would come out that could move it, but I think this CD is going to edge out Heartworn Highways for album of the year on my list. I know, I know, that isn't going to be a popular view, but I have to be true to my heart. Both are compilations, retrospectives, but I feel that the impact of the Highways movie and album have already been felt over the past 30 years. I think the impact of this Reunion CD is yet to be seen, especially in how it will attract new listeners to the hardcore traditional Celtic sound.

If you've been considering getting into traditional Irish music with an upbeat and slightly contemporary flair, I highly recommend getting this CD/DVD combo. And at $14.99 on Amazon, you can't beat the price for a complete two disc set like this. I was surprised. Hope you like it!

Despite having all the Solas albums, I'll probably get this for the DVD.

They're a brillant band and I'm glad you're into them now! Try and get them live - they're fantastic - saw them here in Dublin a few months ago.

You should also check out Cherish the Ladies (Winifred Horan played with them for a while) and Eileen Ivers for some similar stuff (try and get ger best of 79-96 album - avoid the last 2 albums).
And if you only get 1 more celtic music album this year - make it something by Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill. Amazing.

I've got some older Eileen Ivers stuff, and I've been meaning to get some Cherish the Ladies stuff (they used to come through here in Raleigh, but I never got a chance to go see them). I haven't heard of Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill... I'll have to check them out!

Right now I'm enjoying all this Solas stuff, and I'm looking at getting some of the old school stuff -- Silly Wizard, The Boys of the Lough, and some old-school Chieftains. Anything else?

The Chieftains are a must. As are the Bothy Band.

Lunasa are another excellent band in the line of Solas.

Dervish are also worth checking out - Cathy Jordan their lead singer sings in her local accent and it's really special after you tune your ear in.

Liz Carroll, a fiddler from Chicago, writes most of her own tunes.

For a classical-celtic fusion Dordan are one to listen to, as is Michael O Suilleabhan. Dordan's whistler Mary Bergin has released some solo stuff that's brilliant.

Donal Lunny and members of his band such as fiddler Nollaig Casey.

The piper Liam O'Flynn.

I love that we have folks from all over that can see the link between the Celtic traditions, the American Blues & Country traditions, and their weaving together into Old Time and Bluegrass! I love this music!
