New releases: June 27, 2006
Posted by Stacy Chandler at June 23, 2006 11:09 AMHickoryWind's own Sean and I were having a conversation (via e-mail, godblessit) today about CD storage. And the fact that I am running out of it. Sean (and many of you, I'm sure) well understands the seriousness of the situation.
See, about three years ago I purchased the very most excellent and lovely CD shelving units from Ikea. Light-colored wood exterior with midnight blue in each little CD cubbyhole, each holds about 220 CDs. Sturdily constructed (by me -- if I were in the Miss America pageant my talent would be assembling Ikea furniture and I would TOTALLY win). I bought two of them, and soon realized I'd need more space, so I bought a third. Because I'm forward-thinking like that. But not forward-thinking enough, I guess. Now I'm running out of space. Quickly. (Thanks a LOT, heaping gobs of must-have 2006 releases.)
The answer, you might think, would be to go to Ikea (they just opened one in Tokyo) and buy some more shelves and shut up already. But to my horror I've found that my precious, precioussssss shelves have been discontinued. No more. So now I either have to get some additional shelving that probably won't match, or pitch the old stuff and start all over. Or, as my husband points out, I could just stop buying CDs. That guy's a real joker.
Anyway, I guess I'll figure something out. But I know one thing: This week's new releases list isn't helping matters.
New releases for Tuesday, June 27, 2006:
Jimmy Thackery and the Cate Brothers -- In the Natural State (Rykodisc)
Hacienda Brothers -- What's Wrong With Right (Proper)
Darrell Scott -- Invisible Man (Full Lights)
Kris Delmhorst -- Strange Conversation (Signature)
Grant Lee Philips -- Nineteeneighties (Zoe)
Tim O'Reagan -- self-titled (Lost Highway)
The solo debut from the Jayhawks drummer/secret weapon.
J.D. Crowe -- Lefty's Old Guitar (Rounder)
Well here's one thing to help with your CD overcrowding -- don't get the Darrell Scott CD.
I *love*, LOVE, Darrell Scott, but this album is a bit of a stinker. Just doesn't have it. Way too polished and over-produced. Sounds too mainstream Nashville for my tastes.
Posted by: larry at June 23, 2006 1:39 PMI feel your pain. I had around 1,500 CDs and counting.
In the past year I started "thinning" my collection. I also committed to getting rid of two old CDs with each new one I bought. This was easy at first - I haven't listened to some of discs for several years. With some, I'd burn the good songs to keep, and sell the disc.
But now I'm getting to the "core" collection and I'm still buying CDs. And my vinyl, well that's a whole other issue . . .
I can see my wife organizing an intervention at some point.
Posted by: Dusty Bear at June 23, 2006 2:06 PMDusty, you're my kind of stupid. God bless you, dude.
Posted by: larry at June 23, 2006 4:10 PMOooh, a bit of inter-blog controversy. My Darrell Scott review will be up in a few hours.
Posted by: Amanda at June 23, 2006 5:41 PMProbably cost-prohibitive because of shipping to Tokyo, but we invested in Can-Am (www.can-am.ca) CD storage about 7 years ago and love it. Three 3-drawer units, one 2-drawer unit. Total capacity just shy of 3000 CDs. It's about time to order another unit, but it's been great stuff. Small footprint too. Not the most beautiful stuff for prominent display in a formal living room, but it fits right in in a media room.
