Geekin' Out in Portland

Posted by Larry Karnowski at July 25, 2006 7:00 AM

Hope y'all will excuse my lack of a post this week. Work calls, and I'm geeking out at a software conference (OSCON) this week up in Portland, Oregon. Damn, I love this town. It's pretty freakin' hot up here right now, very unseasonable for this area, but still, it's great. Whenever two streets cross in Portland, you're guaranteed that one of the four street corners is a brew pub, probably two are coffee shops (or at least one definitely is!), and there's a very, very good chance that another will be a book store. (I love Powell's! It's HUGE!)

Anyway, not music-related at all, I just wanted to post an excuse!

This will probably get erased (crazy Hickory wind doesn't like poor Bub). Anyway, this guy was wondering what the Portland music sceen was like, and if there are any shows your going to take in on the ol' west coast.

Portland is my favorite city to live in. Hope I see you up there Larry! Best places to have a beer in America I think. So this is Larry-Land? Is this your site or just your favorite?

Hey Bub, glad the site kept your comment this time. (That bugs me that it hasn't in the past?)

Anyway, there's no time for me here to get to any shows, but there's lots of great music to choose from up here, usually. Portland and Seattle seem to have quite a bit of good Indie Rock, including bands like the Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, and Sleater Kinney among many others. Go a little farther north into Canada, especially in the Vancouver area, and you've got all kinds of great "Canadian Americana" music. (Hence some of my unhappiness with the "Americana" moniker.) You've got bands like the Be Good Tanyas, Sarah Harmer, and others my beer-addled brain can't recall at the moment.

I'm off to continue geeking! (Great to hear from you, David! I'll email you!)
