Tweedy Solo at the NCMA

Just got back! Great show, but the opening act (Jennifer O'Conner? O'Connell? not sure) was a real snooze. I'd definitely pass on her if you come across her.

Tweedy was in a great mood, playing with the crowd and teasing some drunk "hecklers." The crowd, mostly 30 and 40-something wine-drinking museum goers, was in love with him.

He played a completely acoustic set, completely alone. He had four different acoustic guitars with him, but he seemed to grab them at random. Normally you keep a couple of guitars for a guitar tech to tune while you're playing something else, and you often keep a guitar or two in different tunings if necessary. Neither seemed to be the case. He'd grab an axe and start tuning it, I think just to talk to the crowd.

He played lots of Wilco favorites, old and new, some of his solo stuff, and even a few Uncle Tupelo tunes -- New Madrid, Acuff-Rose, and closing with Screen Door.

All in all, he played well, sang well, looked healthy, if a little older than I'm used to seeing him. He's happy, I think, and the crowd was glad to see him. Jeff, you're welcome to come back through North Carolina any time, dude!

Tweedy puts on a full length solo show-entertaining and engaging...............a few days later, same venue, Patty Griffin (and yes, I'm a fan) plays a short uninspired set, plugging way too many new slow songs in a short, uninspired set. Oh, well.........the good food, weather and friends all made for a pleasant evening.

..........after rereading that short uninspired review I wish I could hit the edit button!
