New releases: Aug. 29, 2006

As you might have heard, Bob Dylan is back next week with a new release. You'd think the week of a Dylan release would be pretty slim pickings otherwise, but some brave souls ain't skeered of ol' Bob, opting to release their CDs the same week anyways. And hell, as long as you're stopping by your favorite indie music store anyway, you might as well stock up -- Bob has some company on the list you won't want to miss. Like Old Crow friggin' Medicine Show. Review of that one coming soon, but suffice it to say there's no sophomore slump in sight. Maybe it's blasphemy, but I personally have been looking forward to the new OCMS every bit as much as the new Dylan. Maybe (gasp!) even (horrors!) a little more (fainting couch!). And those scamps didn't let me down.

Your shopping list for Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006:
Bob Dylan -- Modern Times (Sony)
Old Crow Medicine Show -- Big Iron World (Nettwerk)
The Grascals -- Long List of Heartaches (Rounder)
Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison -- Happy Holidays (Rykodisc)
OK, a leeeettle early to start thinking about Christmas, but anytime these two lovebirds put their voices together, I'm interested. Except when it's for a Claritin commercial, eesh.
Catie Curtis -- Long Night Moon (Compass)
Ray LaMontagne -- Till the Sun Turns Black (RCA)
Thea Gilmore -- Harpo's Ghost (Sanctuary)
Pete Yorn -- Nightcrawler (Red Ink)

It is a great week indeed ... dammit! Don't be alarmed if you don't hear from me for a week or two. I'll be in a headphone-induced coma.

Via Chet Flippo at CMT: a lost Waylon Jennings album of Hank songs is out this week also.
